🧠The science behind hypnosis continues to grow...

One of the largest recent reviews of research has examined over 20 years of evidence on clinical hypnosis.
The findings show that hypnosis can be an effective intervention for many psychological and physical health conditions, including anxiety, stress, pain management, IBS, and improving emotional wellbeing when delivered by a trained practitioner.
As a trauma-informed clinical hypnotherapist, I love seeing research continue to explain what many of my clients already experience - that when we calm the nervous system, quiet the inner critic and create new neural pathways, real and lasting change becomes possible.
Every session I provide combines evidence-informed hypnotherapy with neuroscience, NLP and somatic approaches, helping clients feel safe enough for the brain to learn healthier patterns.
Science is helping us understand what hypnosis has been demonstrating in practice for many years.

Thank you to TED-Ed and Madhumita Murgia for this clear and thought provoking explanation

I've just watched this brilliant 4-minute TED-Ed talk on how chronic stress affects the brain, and I thought it was well worth sharing.

As a hypnotherapist, people often ask me why we spend a few moments working with the breath before we begin any hypnosis.

The answer is simple...
When we're living with stress, anxiety or trauma, the nervous system can become stuck in a state of protection. Our breathing often becomes faster and shallower without us even noticing.
Before we ask the mind to change, it helps if the body first feels a little safer.

Gentle breathing isn't just about "relaxing." It helps signal to the nervous system that, in this
moment, you're safe. As breathing slows, many people notice their thoughts begin to settle, their body softens, and they become more receptive to the therapeutic work that follows.

This is why breathwork forms part of every session I offer. It's not separate from the therapy-it helps prepare the mind and body to work together.

If you're interested in understanding what stress can do to the brain, this TED-Ed animation explains it beautifully.

I'd love to hear what you think after watching it.

Have you ever wondered what actually happens in the brain during hypnosis?

Thanks to fMRI research, we no longer have to guess. Brain imaging studies show us which regions quieten, which light up, and why certain words land more deeply than others in a relaxed state.

I use this research to shape every script I write. It means the language your brain hears in session is chosen because we know it works, not just because it sounds soothing.

My new blog explains what fMRI informed hypnotherapy is and why it matters for anyone considering this kind of work.

fMRI stands for functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. In plain language — it's a brain scan that shows us which parts of the brain are active in real time.

⭐️Every time you rehearse the worry, the pathway deepens.
⭐️Every time you practise the calm, that one deepens instead.
Your brain doesn’t know the difference between a habit that helps you and one that hurts you. It just strengthens what gets repeated.
So the real question isn’t “what’s wrong with me?” It’s “what have I been practising?”
And more importantly... what would you like to practise instead.
If something in this landed, my inbox is always open. Let’s have a chat about what your brain could be learning instead.”
