What Is Stretching?
When you hear the word stretching, what immediately comes to mind?
What picture appears in your head?
Perhaps someone sitting on the floor reaching towards their toes.
A runner stretching before a race.
A yoga class.
For many of us, stretching is something we naturally associate with sport or exercise.
And that is completely understandable.
The word stretch makes us think about making something longer. If we stretch an elastic band or pull on a piece of fabric, it lengthens. So it is easy to see why many of us associate stretching with making muscles longer too.
But is that the only way of interpreting the word?
Let’s look beneath the skin.
When I hear the word stretching, my mind goes somewhere slightly different.
I do not immediately picture someone bending over to touch their toes.
Instead, I begin by asking:
What is the purpose?
What is the intention?
What are we trying to achieve?
What is the body telling us?
Only then do I begin thinking about what may be happening beneath the skin.
Every movement we make relies on our muscles repeatedly shortening and lengthening.
Walking.
Reaching.
Bending.
Climbing stairs.
Running.
Muscles are not only changing length when we stop to perform a stretch. They do it every time we move.
So what makes stretching different?
Stretching becomes deliberate when we intentionally apply a controlled load to muscles and other soft tissues with a particular purpose in mind.
That purpose is not simply to make muscles longer. Rather, it is to create a stretching stimulus that encourages the muscles, connective tissues and nervous system to respond and, over time, adapt.
As that load is applied, sensory receptors within the muscles continually monitor changes in length and tension and relay that information through the nervous system.
Together, the muscles, connective tissues, joints and nervous system influence how we move, how movement feels and how much movement the body is prepared to allow at that moment.
Like every other system in the body, these tissues have the capacity to adapt.
But adaptation does not happen because we stretch once.
It develops when the body is exposed to an appropriate stimulus, applied consistently over time.
Understanding what stretching is is only the beginning.
Because stretching is not a single technique.
It is an umbrella term that describes several different approaches, each with its own purpose, timing and application.
So rather than simply asking:
“What stretch should I do?”
perhaps the more useful starting point is:
“What am I trying to achieve?”
That is where our exploration of the stretching umbrella begins.
