🐿 Squirrels forget where they hide their snacks... and end up planting whole forests!

Every autumn, squirrels dash through forests and parks, hiding nuts in countless spots to prepare for winter. What many people don't realize is that these forgetful foragers are accidental forest heroes.

By burying more nuts than they can retrieve—or simply forgetting where they stashed them—squirrels help plant thousands of new trees each year.

This natural scatter-hoarding behavior promotes reforestation and increases biodiversity, especially among oak trees in the UK.

Red and grey squirrels are the main contributors to this underground tree-planting operation. Even with their brain capacity increasing in the fall to help them remember food caches, many buried seeds are never reclaimed. These lost snacks take root, sprouting new trees that go on to support entire ecosystems. In this way, squirrels don't just survive off the land—they help regenerate and sustain it. Next time you see a squirrel darting by with an acorn, just remember: it might be planting the forest of the future.
