We recently asked our team what makes The Walcote Practice special as a medical practice, and this was one of their replies: “Going the extra mile for our patients.”

From responding to patient queries promptly in order to reduce worry time, to actively sourcing the soonest available imaging investigations for unwell patients, from sensitively supporting patients and relatives through the highs and lows of their healthcare journeys, to staying open for face-to-face patient appointments throughout the entirety of the pandemic, 'going the extra mile for patients' is embedded within our team philosophy and is embodied in the personalised healthcare that we provide to patients.

Acne can affect any age group. It occurs when dead skin and excessive sebum oil block pores on the face, back, chest or neck, leading to some or all of the following:

• Skin bumps, blackheads, whiteheads or cystic spots
• Inflammation, pain, redness, swelling or scarring
• Possible multiplication of bacteria within inflamed pores
• Negatively impacted self-esteem

Acne is not due to a lack of washing the affected area/s. Hormones, genetics, stress and lifestyle can all play a role, and acne can last for many years if left untreated.

At The Walcote Practice, our Specialist Doctor In Dermatology, Dr Annabel Freeborough, is able to help. She will sensitively assess your acne and provide skin care and dietary advice. If needed, she can also prescribe treatments which may be topical, tablet, hormonal or antibiotic.

In severe cases where acne is not responding to other treatments, or where it is causing significant scarring or distress, Dr Freeborough will consider prescribing Isotretinoin treatment.

With the summer holidays fast approaching, you may be planning to travel to a foreign destination sometime soon.

To help protect your health so you can make the most of your time abroad, our Private GPs at The Walcote Practice provide personalised travel health advice tailored to your destination and individual needs; they also administer travel vaccines if required. Dr Alwin Hoelzl, who holds a distinction in the Diploma In Travel Health, is able to support you with any in-depth or complex travel health queries.

We recommend that you book your initial travel health consultation at least two months prior to your date of travel, to give adequate time to optimise your travel vaccine immunity. Every year, we make sure that all team members of The Walcote Practice, regardless of role, are offered refresher training in Basic Life Support. This invaluable skill set can literally mean the difference between life and death in an emergency situation.

Would you know what to do? If not, we encourage you to seek training in these simple skills that could enable you to save the life of a family member, a friend or even a stranger in an emergency.

Sun Awareness Week marks the start of a summer long campaign to raise awareness around sun protection and skin cancer, one of the most common cancers in the UK.

Remember, it's not just sunbathing that puts you at risk, but being in the sun without adequate protection. To guard against risks of skin cancer, practice sun safety by following the five ‘S’s below and never sunburn your skin:

- Suncream factor 30+ and 4 or 5 stars, apply 30 minutes before going outside and reapply regularly throughout the day
- Sun hat
- Sunglasses
- Seek shade
- Say no to sunbeds

Make sure to self-check your body at least twice a year front and back for lesions (any lump, bump or flat mark on the skin) that stand out to you, have changed or have newly appeared. Check all sites including your scalp, between fingers and toes. To spot potential skin cancer, check the skin lesion/s for ‘ABCDE’ as per our post in March.

Our Private GPs at The Walcote Practice are able to undertake a full skin check with a dermatoscope - a handheld device using light and magnification to assess skin lesions. We can also discuss sun safety and preventative methods for reducing your risk of skin cancer.

To book a skin check, please call 01962 828715
