Lotus Midwife

Lotus Midwife Lotus Midwife is an Independent Midwifery Practice, provides antenatal care, support during your baby's birth, and postnatal care for six weeks.

Berkshire Independent Midwifery Practice is a new service launching in January 2016. I am Sarah March, registered Midwife, International Certified Lactation Consultant and Tongue-tie Practitioner. A Birth mother myself to three children, (one Vaginal Breech Birth, one Homebirth, one Premature Emergency Cesarean), and I am also blessed to have two grown up children who complete my Family. I offer t

ailored Antenatal care, unhurried and relaxed in your own home; this can be one off appointments in addition to your NHS care, or part of a complete package. For your Labour and Baby's Birth, I am experienced in Homebirth and Waterbirth, however can accompany you to your hospital birth if desired. Most hospitals do not provide insurance for independent midwives, therefore if you chose a hospital birth, (or we transfer there in the event of a complication) I can accompany you as your advocate. Postnatal support is available for six weeks following the birth of your baby, I visit you at home daily to start, and can assist you with all aspects of feeding and caring for your newborn. As a Lactation Consultant, I specialise in Breastfeeding support and can offer one to one breastfeeding antenatal and postnatal sessions, also as a one off appointment or as part of your pregnancy package. I specialise in tongue tie assessment and am qualified to perform frenulotomy (the division of the tongue tie) in babies up to six months old. Other services include:

Support and Advocacy for Consultant appointments,

Birth Plan preparation,

Previous Birth Debrief,

Pregnancy Belly Casting and Birth Art! Please do call for a chat if you feel an independent midwife might be right for you, i would be happy to answer your questions!

🌟 Does your baby keep Turing their head away when they feed from the breast or the bottle?

🌟 It might be that your fingers are brushing against their cheeks by accident and they will turn their head towards the soft finger - thinking it’s the ni**le!

🌟 If you are worried about latching when feeding then please do get in touch 🥰

🌟 Are you struggling to feed your baby either in the breast or the bottle - and your midwife has said that they cannot look for, or diagnose a tongue tie?

🌟 Unfortunately, midwives are not trained to diagnose tongue ties-but they “should” at least have a basic understanding of the symptoms and be able to refer you to someone who can diagnose for you.

🌟 If your midwife does not offer this automatically- you can ask to be referred.

Do you work in a Neonatal Unit?

Do you have a positive story to share about how your unit supports parents?  We are looking to learn from those working in NICU to understand and celebrate what works well.

Good quality practical and emotional support is important in helping women breastfeed for longer. This can be particularly important when babies are born sick or premature and admitted to the neonatal unit. This can be a really challenging time and we know that broader experiences on the neonatal unit and in caring for babies can affect parents experiences of feeding them. In this research we want to better understand how these different experiences can be supported by the staff caring for families. We are looking for positive stories of outstanding care, strategies and initiatives that have helped families to reach their breastfeeding goals.  We hope the findings will help us better understand and shape breastfeeding support within the neonatal unit.

As part of this we are looking for neonatal staff and volunteers who work or have worked on a neonatal unit within the past 10 years who would be willing to be interviewed to share their experiences.  The interview will take 30 minutes depending on how much you would like to say.

We would like to hear from staff and volunteers who are:

·      Based in the UK
·      Aged 18+
·      Who work or have worked in a neonatal unit within the last 10 years.

We hope that the findings from our research will support positive changes for future parents.

If you’d like to take part please email [email protected] for further information.

🌟 How does a silicone Hakka style breastpump work?

🌟 These are not just milk collectors, but neither are they breast ‘pumps’

🌟 They use negative pressure to stay in place, and this same pressure pulls breastmilk out of the breast. So they don’t just collect the ‘let down’ they take that and a bit more.

🌟 They can be useful, but they can also cause oversupply (because of the drawing out of the extra milk) so should be used with caution ❤️

🌟Why does your baby turn their head downwards when you are trying to latch them onto the breast?

🌟 Most often this is because your finger accidentally their cheek during the latch, so your baby thinks that your finger is the ni**le and they turn their head towards it

🌟 If you try to remember to keep your fingers hooked over their shoulder under their ears, then this should help ❤️
