Sue Harrison, Senior Manager at Accenture, shares her experience of building a successful career while living with profound hearing loss in her right ear.

Her disability doesn't define her - or limit what she can achieve. Accenture was the first employer where Sue felt comfortable being open about her disability and explaining the support she needed.

By providing the support and equipment she needed, Accenture enabled her to work confidently, comfortably and to perform at her best.

Sue's advice is simple but powerful:
"Be honest about what you need. Asking for adjustments is not a weakness; it enables you to do your job well and participate fully. Any good employer will value you for who you are and make the adjustments you need to succeed."

Creating inclusive workplaces is about fostering a culture where people feel safe to speak up, ask for support, and reach their full potential.

A***n shares his lived experience of discussing and disclosing his disability, and introduces a framework you can use to discuss your disability with recruiters, managers and colleagues:

When discussing your disability with recruiters, avoid a long list of what you can’t do. Instead, use the “Two-Line Rule”:

1. The Fact: Briefly state the situation (e.g., “I have a spinal injury that has the changed the way I look at the world”).
2. The Resolution: Highlight your resilience, or how you overcame/manged your condition (e.g., “By managing my schedule and using ergonomic support, I’ve maintained high performance in demanding environments”).

A***n says:
“Understanding the support available to you, both during recruitment and in the workplace, is essential to your success. Whether it is requesting adjustments for an interview or asking for a specialised chair on day one, these aren't "favours"; they are the tools that allow you to bring your best self to work.”
