5 Early Signs of Dementia Families Often Miss
(By Nicole Thompson, Manager at Dove Court)
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing a series of articles about dementia — offering guidance, practical advice, and support for families navigating this journey.
When a loved one begins to change, it’s easy to put it down to “just getting older.”
However, some early signs of dementia are often overlooked.
Recognising these signs early can help families access the right support sooner.
1️⃣ Memory loss that disrupts daily life
It’s normal to forget things occasionally.
But repeating the same questions, forgetting important dates, or relying heavily on reminders may be an early warning sign.
2️⃣ Difficulty completing familiar tasks
Struggling with everyday activities - such as making a cup of tea or managing bills - can indicate more than normal ageing.
3️⃣ Confusion with time or place
Losing track of dates or becoming disoriented in familiar surroundings is something to pay close attention to.
4️⃣ Changes in mood or personality
A person may become more withdrawn, anxious, or easily upset - especially in situations that never used to affect them.
5️⃣ Problems with communication
They may pause mid-conversation, struggle to find the right words, or repeat themselves more frequently.
