Patient attended clinic complaining of a painful lump on the sole of the foot. Following assessment, a heloma durum (hard corn) was identified and carefully enucleated to relieve pain and discomfort.

Hard corns develop due to repeated pressure and friction, often from footwear, foot structure, or areas of increased weight-bearing. Treatment focuses on reducing the build-up of hard skin and addressing the underlying cause to help prevent recurrence.

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, most commonly on the big toe. It can cause:

* Pain and tenderness along the nail edge
* Redness and swelling
* Warmth around the toe
* Infection, sometimes with pus or drainage
* Overgrowth of tissue around the nail in chronic cases

Common causes include:

* Cutting toenails too short or rounding the corners
* Tight-fitting shoes or boots
* Repeated trauma (running, kicking sports, etc.)
* Naturally curved or thick nails

If the toe is severely painful, draining pus, very swollen, or if you have conditions such as diabetes or poor circulation, it’s important to seek medical attention. A podiatrist may need to remove part of the nail and treat any infection.
