Unsure whether you need regular massage maintenance? Have a look through the checklist below to see if any apply to you -
1. The biggest sign! You will hold tension in your neck and shoulders. Now this is something you can feel for yourself using your fingers. Gently push down on the top of your shoulders (trap area) and the back of your neck, it should feel soft/squishy when relaxed or hard when tense. If it feels firmer/stiffer than usual, that means your body is holding onto stress. This is a sign of spiked Cortisol levels and is a simple fix.
2. You feel dull aches/pains all over for apparently no reason! If your muscles are naturally aching without doing any type of exercise, that is a sign you are lacking in something. Gentle stretches and good hydration/nutrition can help but ultimately the muscles and connective tissue needs stimulating and manipulation to improve the circulation.
3. Your joints are clicking/popping more frequently than normal. You can test this by rotating your arm/shoulder, flexing and extending your knee and circling your wrists/ankles. Is it painful to walk or even get out of bed in the mornings? Back, neck, shoulder, hip or knee pain frequently?
4. Mild to severe headaches? 9/10 times this is down to holding tension in the neck and upper body without releasing it. Constant strain will cause unnecessary pain.
5. Poor sleep quality/change in sleeping habits? This can be a sign of high Cortisol levels. A very common problem if you are feeling overwhelmed, overstimulated or severely stressed day to day. Again, this is a problem you simply do not need to live with.
6. Limited range of motion/flexibility? Are you able to move around quickly and effortlessly without feeling restriction in your limbs? Everyday tasks such as work, exercise, housework or lifting the kids up is becoming increasingly harder work for you?
How frequently should you have a massage?
Injury recovery/DOMS/persistent pain/aches/myofascia dysfunction/ knotting -
1-3 times per week.
Spiked Cortisol/stress levels/poor sleep/tension/headaches/circulation/flexibility- weekly or Bi weekly.
Full body maintenance massage/relaxation -
monthly or every 3 weeks.
There are multiple signs your body is in need, I have listed the most obvious/common issues. Some signs are unfortunately not as easy to pick up on yourself...but that's where your massage Therapist comes in, we know what to look/feel for.
