Creating a dementia-friendly community starts with how we treat people.

For someone living with dementia, everyday situations can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming. They may need a little more time to find the right words, make a decision, count money, follow directions or explain what they need.

One of the most helpful things we can do is slow down.

A calm voice, a warm smile and a little patience can make a big difference.
Try to:
• Give people time to respond
• Use clear, simple language
• Avoid rushing or correcting unnecessarily
• Offer reassurance if someone seems unsure
• Remember that confusion is not rudeness

At Home Instead, we believe every person deserves to feel respected, included and understood, wherever they are in the community.

Looking through old photographs can be a lovely activity for someone living with dementia.

Family albums, wedding photos, holiday pictures, school memories or images of places they once lived can open up gentle conversations and help someone feel connected to their life story.

You do not need to ask lots of direct questions. Sometimes it is enough to sit together and say:
“This looks like a lovely day.”
“Who was this with you?”
“I wonder where this was taken?”
“What a beautiful dress.”

Reminiscence is not about testing memory. It is about creating comfort, connection and moments of recognition.

At Home Instead, we know that familiar memories, faces and stories can play an important role in helping clients feel seen, valued and understood.

Dementia can sometimes affect how a person sees and understands the world around them.

Using contrast can help make important things easier to notice.

For example:
• A toilet seat in a contrasting colour can be easier to see
• A brightly coloured plate can help food stand out
• Clear signs can help identify rooms
• Contrasting handrails can support safer movement
• Plain flooring can be easier to understand than busy patterns

These small changes can help reduce frustration and support independence with everyday routines.

At Home Instead, we understand that dementia-friendly care is not about taking over. It is about helping clients continue doing as much as they can, with the right support in place.

Choosing care for a loved one is about more than making sure tasks are completed.

It is about finding someone who understands them, listens properly and makes them feel at ease.

At Home Instead, we carefully match clients with Care Professionals based on their needs, preferences, interests and personality. This helps create a relationship that feels natural, respectful and reassuring.

For one person, that might mean being matched with someone who enjoys getting out for walks. For another, it might be someone who loves baking, chatting about family, visiting the garden centre or supporting a favourite routine.

The little things matter, and they can help turn care visits into something clients look forward to.

Warm weather can be difficult for anyone, but older adults can be more vulnerable to the effects of heat, especially if they live alone, have health conditions, or are taking certain medications.

A few small steps can make a big difference:

• Encourage regular cool drinks throughout the day.
• Keep curtains or blinds closed in rooms that face the sun.
• Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day.
• Choose light, loose clothing.
• Offer cool meals, such as salads, fruit or sandwiches.
• Check in regularly, especially if your loved one lives alone.

At Home Instead, our Care Professionals can help clients stay comfortable, hydrated and safe at home during warmer weather.

If you are worried about an older loved one during the heat, regular support at home can offer real peace of mind.
