Birth Baby Balance

Birth Baby Balance Guidance, support and information through pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.

Sarah, Charlotte, Kirsten, and Lucy are birth and postnatal doulas, passionate about supporting women through their pregnancies, labours and transitions into motherhood. We also provide antenatal education classes, breathing for labour classes, baby massage classes, postnatal pilates classes, placenta encapsulation and breastfeeding support. We have produced an audio download of Visualisations for Labour, to help pregnant women learn to breathe and relax effectively when the time comes.

Are you due from September? Have you started thinking about antenatal classes yet? It may seem too early, but good courses get booked up quickly!

So, why attend antenatal classes?

💚 to meet other couples due at a similar time to you. The support you'll get from your group once your babies are all here is beyond price - having a group of local friends who you have had a chance to get to know over a period of several weeks during pregnancy to share experiences with and pick the brains of in the early overwhelming and exhausting weeks of new parenthood is a brilliant way to start.

🧡 knowledge is power! Going into birth feeling well informed about what might happen, what choices you might face, what might cause things to go off course and what you can do about it if they do, what your rights are, can all help you to feel more confident on the day

💜 enabling your birth partner to feel well prepared. Being a birth partner isn't always easy, as they can feel a bit helpless in how they can best support you. Understanding the process and their role in it can go a long way in boosting their confidence

💚 knowing what you can do in advance (as well as on the day) to give you the best chance of everything going as smoothly as possible. When you know what can both help and hinder the birth process, you feel more in control

🧡 learning techniques to help the birth process work as it is designed to - whether that be breathing for labour, positions for mum and baby to aid the baby's journey through the pelvis, relaxation methods, massage strokes, or more

Our next antenatal courses start in Witney on 8th July and 6th August, for Sept-Dec babies. What are you waiting for?!

Really excited for this wonderful group of expectant couples, who finished their 6 week antenatal course last night, and are now on their way to becoming first time parents!

Over the past 6 weeks, they have learnt about:

💚 the process of labour
🧡 the role of hormones in labour
💜 their rights in labour
💚 why labour sometimes doesn't go "according to plan"
🧡 what happens during an induction, and why one might be offered
💜 what happens during a Caesarean, and why one might be needed
💚 the impact of a new baby on relationships
🧡 why babies cry, and how to settle them
💜 normal infant sleep behaviour, and safe sleep practices
💚 postnatal recovery, however birth goes
🧡 feeding a baby, breast or bottle
💜 nappy changing and baby bathing

Plus they've had a chance to ask questions, consider options that they didn't know were available to them, understand hospital policies, make new friends, think about what matters to them in labour and much more!

If you'd like to get well informed, if you're due between early September and late October and if you live in or near West Oxfordshire, then my next course has your name on it! It runs in Witney from 8th July-12th August, and only has 3 spaces still available, so grab yours quickly!

Are you getting ready to wean your baby? Would you know what to do if they choked?
Or if your baby/toddler burnt/scalded themselves?
Or if they had a head injury or heavy bleed?
Or if they needed CPR?
No-one wants to find themselves in any of these situations, but if an accident were to happen, it is good to feel prepared.
Our next Infant and Family First Aid courses are on Tuesday 16th June from 11-1 and Saturday 18th July from 2-4, both in Witney. They are aimed at parents, carers, baby sitters, grandparents etc - anyone who may be looking after a little one.
2 hours to feel confident that you would have the skills and knowledge you needed in an emergency situation.
Babes in arms welcome.

As the weather gets nicer, it can be lovely to get outside with your baby, and even nicer if you can meet other new mums in the process. Come and join our weekly walking group, Walk and Talk, to discover a selection of pram friendly walks in and around Witney. The walks take place every Tuesday at 1.00, and, where possible, we finish at a coffee shop, so the talking can keep on happening! We will be walking throughout the summer, unless it is extremely hot. Older siblings, dogs, grandparents, partners and friends are all welcome - the cost is per family, not per individual.

Find out more and come and join the fun here: https://www.birthbabybalance.co.uk/walking-and-talking-groups

Our weekly Walking and Talking group takes place every Tuesday at 1.00 in West Oxfordshire. The location changes each week, depending on the weather. We check the forecast on Sunday and then announce on a dedicated WhatsApp group where that week’s walk will be.

Everyone is welcome - parents, grandparents, babies, older siblings, friends, dogs!

Where possible we end the walk at a coffee shop so that the talking can keep on going, even if the walking has finished.

We will be operating throughout the summer, when many other baby groups and activities close down.

So come and join us - make new friends, discover lovely local walks, and enjoy a well earned piece of cake!

All the details, including the link to join the WhatsApp group, can be found here: https://www.birthbabybalance.co.uk/walking-and-talking-groups

Our next baby massage course in Witney starts on 9th July, and is filling up fast! The 6 week course takes place on Thursdays from 11.30-1.00. The ideal time to learn to massage your baby is when they are between 8 and 16 weeks old, as they are coming out of the very sleepy newborn phase but are not yet on the move!

Many baby groups and activities close for the school summer holidays, so if you want to have something fun to go to with your baby through the summer, then grab your place quickly before they all go!

Learning how to massage your baby is a wonderful way to interact with them, and connect on a deep level. It can help you to feel more confident in easing discomfort if their tummy hurts, to help to relax them in readiness for sleep, to become more familiar with their cues and so more able to answer their needs in a timely manner, to have an activity to do together at home, and to share with your partner so that they can enjoy positive touch with their baby, as well as giving you a chance to get out of the house and meet other mums.

Each class includes time to participate in a guided discussion on a variety of subjects related to motherhood and the challenges and delights of a new baby. It is a great way to not feel alone, especially if you don’t have many local friends with babies of a similar age.

Our next 6 week course starts on 9th July in Witney. Suitable for babies aged 8 weeks to crawling.

Baby massage is a wonderful way to connect with your baby, meet other mums with babies of a similar age, learn a skill which can help to settle, calm and relax your baby, share top tips and life hacks, have a reason to get out of the house, and feel more confident in your parenting.

Many baby groups and activities close for the summer holidays, which can leave you with little to fill your days through July and August. So if your baby is now between 4 and 12 weeks old, grab your place quickly for next month’s course, as it is likely to be very popular!
