Everyone is telling you to eat more protein to lose weight after 40… But what if you’re focusing on protein and still struggling with cravings, hunger, energy and your weight?

Because protein is only one piece of the puzzle.

Yes, protein is important — particularly as we get older, when maintaining and building muscle becomes increasingly important.

But if you want to lose body fat and feel better in your body, you also need to think about:

🌿 FIBRE

Fibre helps keep you feeling fuller for longer, supports digestion and feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

And your gut microbiome is involved in oestrogen metabolism too — something that becomes particularly interesting for women as we move through our 40s and beyond.

So instead of obsessing over one thing, let’s look at the whole picture:

🥚 Protein to support muscle
💪 Resistance training to build and maintain muscle
🥦 Fibre-rich plants to support fullness and your gut
🥑 Healthy fats to nourish your body
🩸 Balanced meals to support blood sugar
😴 Sleep and recovery
🧠 Your relationship with food
🌿 And habits you can actually sustain

This is how I approach nutrition.

Not another restrictive diet.

Not counting every calorie.

Not cutting out everything you enjoy.

Learning how to nourish your body properly so you can lose weight, feel stronger and feel good in your body again. It’s about putting the pieces of the puzzle together.

And if you’re over 40 and struggling with cravings, energy or stubborn weight, you may need to look beyond protein. 🌿

Follow me for realistic nutrition advice for women 40+.

Save this post if you’re trying to improve your nutrition without falling into another restrictive diet.

FINAL SCREEN:

☀️ Morning daylight
🌙 Darkness at night
⏰ Support your body clock
💛 Support sleep & wellbeing
health
Your body has an internal clock — and light is one of its most important signals.

Getting natural daylight, particularly earlier in the day, helps your brain synchronise your circadian rhythm with the day-night cycle. This can support healthy sleep-wake timing, alertness and mood.

So tomorrow morning, before getting caught up in your phone or your to-do list…

☀️ Step outside.
🚶‍♀️ Take a short walk.
☕ Have your coffee outside.
🌿 Let your eyes experience— just enjoy being outside.

It’s free, simple and one of those small daily habits that can make a difference.

And what if health wasn’t about hacking your body?

What if it wasn’t about constantly calculating how many calories you eat…

How much protein you’ve had…

How many steps you’ve done…

How many workouts you’ve completed…

Or finding the next supplement, protocol or “hack” to finally get your body to do what you want?

What if your body already knows so much more than we give it credit for?

Your body is constantly communicating with you.

Your hunger.

Your fullness.

Your energy.

Your sleep.

Your cravings.

Your natural body clock.

Your stress levels.

Your hormones.

And perhaps the missing piece isn’t more control…

Perhaps it’s learning to listen.

Imagine eating because you’re genuinely hungry rather than because an app tells you it’s time to eat.

Choosing nourishing food because you actually enjoy how it makes you feel — not because you’re afraid of gaining weight.

Moving your body because it feels good and supports you — not because you need to “burn off” what you ate.

And allowing your nervous system to experience safety instead of constantly telling your body:

“I need to lose weight.”

“I’m doing it wrong.”

“I need to be stricter.”

“I need to try harder.”

Your body isn’t your enemy.

It isn’t something you need to constantly fight, control or hack.

It is an incredibly intelligent system that is constantly working to find balance.

And when we move away from restriction, fear and deprivation…

and towards nourishment, connection, enjoyment and trust…

we create a very different relationship with our body.

Maybe the question isn’t:

“What else can I do to control my body?”

Maybe it’s:

“What would happen if I started trusting the intelligence of my body?”

Because sometimes, the path to better health isn’t about doing MORE.

It’s about creating the conditions where your body can do what it already knows how to do. 🤍

What if your body isn’t the problem?

How many years have you spent trying to fix, control, shrink or fight your body?

Another diet.
Another set of rules.
Another Monday morning.
Another promise that “this time will be different.”

And when it doesn’t work, what do we usually blame?

“I have no willpower.”
“My metabolism is broken.”
“I’m getting older.”
“I just can’t lose weight.”

But what if we stopped fighting our bodies and started working with them?

Your body is constantly adapting to your environment, your food, your sleep, your movement, your emotions and your daily habits.

Your body isn’t your enemy.

It’s been working incredibly hard to look after you.

And your thoughts matter too.

The thoughts you repeat become beliefs.

And those beliefs can influence how you see yourself, the choices you make and the actions you take.

So perhaps the first step isn’t another diet.

Perhaps it’s changing the way you think about yourself and your body.

What if your body isn’t the problem… but the way you’ve been taught to think about your body is?

Are you really hungry… or has your body simply learnt to expect food?

If you always reach for a snack at 4pm, your body can start to anticipate it.

But before automatically reaching for something to eat, try pausing and asking yourself:

✨ Am I physically hungry?
✨ How hungry am I from 1–10?
✨ Would I eat a proper meal right now?
✨ Or am I tired, stressed, bored or simply following a familiar routine?

You don’t need to ignore genuine hunger.
You don’t need to “be good” or use willpower.

You’re learning to listen to your body.

And here’s the really exciting part: your body can adapt. As you create new eating patterns and learn to build satisfying meals with enough protein, fibre and healthy fats, your hunger and cravings can become easier to understand and manage.

Healthy weight isn’t just about what you eat.

It’s also about your relationship with food, your thoughts and the habits you’ve created. What time do you usually get hungry for a snack?

✨ Maybe your body doesn’t need more pressure... maybe it needs more support.

For years we’ve been told...

“Eat less.”

“Exercise more.”

“Try harder.”

And when the scales don’t move, we blame ourselves.

But what if the answer isn’t pushing your body harder?

What if it’s learning to work with it instead of against it?

When we’re constantly stressed, rushing, skipping meals, over-exercising or criticising ourselves, our body can remain in a state of stress. Elevated stress hormones, such as cortisol, can influence our appetite, energy levels, sleep and food choices, making it harder to build healthy habits.

Imagine choosing a different approach...

🌿 Nourishing your body instead of depriving it.

🌿 Walking in nature because it makes you feel alive.

🌿 Eating slowly and noticing when you’re comfortably full.

🌿 Choosing foods that leave you feeling energised.

🌿 Sleeping well and giving your body time to recover.

🌿 Speaking to yourself with kindness instead of criticism.

Your body is renewing itself every day.

Every nourishing meal, every restful night, every walk outside and every moment you choose self-care is a message to your body that it is safe and supported.

Healthy weight isn’t created through punishment.

It’s supported by consistent habits, a calmer mind and a body that is well nourished.

When you stop fighting your body and start listening to it, healthy choices become easier—and over time, those choices can support a healthier weight and a healthier you.

💚 Today, ask yourself:

“How can I support my body today instead of trying to control it?”

Every cell in your body has a circadian rhythm ⏰

We are wired to follow the cycles of light, darkness, and the seasons. Aligning with these rhythms isn’t just “nice to do”—it supports immunity, metabolism, digestion, and overall wellbeing.

🌅 Light: The Master Reset Button

Morning light is one of the most powerful ways to reset your circadian rhythm. Just a few minutes outside after waking helps:

Strengthen your immune system

Reduce inflammation

Support metabolic health

Lower risk of insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes

Light tells your body when to wake, eat, digest, and rest.

🍽️ Meal Timing Matters

Your metabolism follows a circadian rhythm too. Eating a balanced breakfast within 30–60 minutes of waking helps set the rhythm of your cells. Include:

Protein

Fibre

Healthy fats

Finish eating at least 3 hours before bedtime to give your body space for repair and restoration.

🔥 Calories & Insulin Sensitivity Follow the Clock

We burn more calories in the morning

We are more insulin-sensitive earlier in the day

Digestion slows, and insulin resistance rises as evening falls

Eating the bulk of calories earlier, with a lighter dinner before sunset, improves metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and helps maintain a healthy weight.

❄️ Winter Is a Season of Energy Conservation

In winter, our bodies naturally become more insulin-resistant—an energy-saving mechanism. Support yourself by:

Aligning meals with daylight

Eating seasonal foods

Prioritising warmth, rest, and nourishment

Honouring slower rhythms instead of fighting them

🌙 Align With Nature, Support Your Health

When we follow the circadian rhythm of light and the seasonal rhythm of winter, we work with our biology, not against it.

January isn’t about doing more.
It’s about listening, aligning, and restoring.

✨ Step outside, eat mindfully, and let your body follow its natural rhythm ✨
