We as humans need connection, and in this era of social media, while we can be more connected, we are becoming ever more lonely and detached.

Human connection is not a luxury; it is a core facet of the human condition. To be in contact with another living being is an absolute biological necessity. A lack of physical touch and emotional attunement has catastrophic, long-term effects on us as humans.

Society is changing to the point where we as people are becoming more and more disconnected from our communities - even with the connections that social media gives us. As we become more disconnected, we are at risk of becoming more lonely and this hit our mental health hard.

Men, traditionally have sought kinship in their friend groups, sharing energy whether it be through a pint, football or golf (for example). But what happens when these interactions are not longer possible?

Why don’t men talk about their mental health more? It’s something that is growing in awareness - June 2026 is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month after all, but does that not suggest that it is still a real problem in today’s society? And… if so, what can we do about it?

Within modern clinical spaces, including the NHS, disciplines like dance and movement psychotherapy have long recognised that healing is not strictly intellectual. Consider how a glass shatters when exposed to a specific sound frequency. It is not merely a matter of volume; it is about hitting the exact, precise pitch. When a physical tissue reaches its pure resonance, it naturally begins to vibrate.

This biological reality means that every time we speak, listen, or are exposed to sound, our physiology is influenced in some way. The essential question we must ask as practitioners and individuals is: Is that impact therapeutic?

Medicine saved my mum's life, but physio gave her, her life back... so I chose physio. But 36 years ago, societal norms were different and becoming a physio as a male was very different and frowned upon. And so it was when I sought a reference from my school headteacher to be able to apply to study physiotherapy.

"Physiotherapy is a woman's job!", was the response...

But those challenges, and the path to physio I subsequently took, made my journey all the more richer as a result...

Why do people, 'people please'. And why can it often be the result of early years experiences and lead to health challenges later in life?

And, how can neuroplasticity help us overcome these challenges?

Why am I a Therapist? More specifically, why did I choose physiotherapy as my starting point into therapy as a profession before expanding my knowledge and training beyond?

The answer lies in my history, my mother's own experiences with ill health and witnessing how therapy, can give a person back their lives.

There is great power in community and in the power of social connections and being together. There is also the adverse power of isolation and neglect.

Sadly, we are experiencing almost epidemic levels of loneliness, across all age groups, not just the elderly.  There are more and more people living alone, working from home and not connecting with friends face to face. It’s no coincidence then that we are witnessing an exponential increase in chronic ill health.

Our nervous system is like a river. The river has a capacity, and when that capacity is breached as a result of too much, too fast, for too long (or not enough, in the case of neglect), the river floods. It overwhelms our capacity to cope, and that’s when trauma happens.

Healing requires us to be able to process all the emotions from any experience. Emotion as a word originates from the latin work ‘Emovere’ - movement. If we don’t allow our experiences to ‘move’ through us, they can become stuck, which leads to illness.

In short, if you cannot feel, it is very likely that you will find it very difficult to heal.
