On Wednesday 12th August 2026, the Moon will pass directly in front of the Sun, creating a partial solar eclipse. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒ’

From the UK, the Moon will cover up to 96% of the Sun, depending on where you are. ๐ŸŒ‘โœจ

Between around 6pm and 8pm, the daylight will fade, the sky will take on an eerie twilight glow, and the Sun will transform into a spectacular fiery crescent. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŒ™

Itโ€™s an event you wonโ€™t want to miss โ€” so make sure youโ€™re ready to look up! ๐Ÿ‘€

โš ๏ธ Remember: never look directly at the Sun without proper eclipse-safe eye protection.

Cut them lengthways into quarters. ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ…๐Ÿซ’๐Ÿ’

โš ๏ธ For young children, ALWAYS prepare round foods safely by cutting them lengthways into quarters to reduce the risk of choking.

Kate spent the morning with this absolutely delightful group of children today, learning first aid at their summer camp. Some were as young as 4 and just wanted to "have a try!" โ€“ and they were amazing!

It's so important that children learn these skills from a young age. Not only does it help them build confidence, but it gives them the knowledge to look after themselves, help their friends, and even care for the people they love at home. You never know when these skills might make all the difference. ๐Ÿ’š

Kate was especially excited to deliver today's Baby & Child First Aid class for parents and carers at a famous industry landmark โ€“ Jaguar Landrover Solihull ๐Ÿš™๐Ÿ’š

Last Christmas, Jaguar Land Rover chose Freddie's Wish - Warwickshire as one of their 12 nominated charities, generously donating an incredible ยฃ2,500 to support their work. ๐Ÿ’™

As part of their ongoing support, we were delighted to be asked by Freddie's Wish to deliver our 2-hour Baby & Child First Aid class for some of the parents and carers who work at JLR.

It's fantastic to see employers investing in the wellbeing of their staff and their families by equipping parents and carers with the confidence and practical skills to respond in an emergency.

A huge thank you to Freddie's Wish and everyone at Jaguar Land Rover for making today's session possible. What a fantastic team! ๐Ÿ’š

The colour of your child's swimwear could save their life - if your child ends up in difficulty, every second counts.

Choose bright, high-visibility colours like neon yellow, orange, pink, or green. These colours stand out against the water, making it much easier to spot your child if they go under or wander off.

Avoid blue, grey, or white swimwear. These colours can blend into the water, making it far more difficult to see a child when time is critical.

It might seem like a small detail, but it could make all the difference in an emergency.

๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’› Choose colours that can be seen, not colours that disappear.

Every year, we hear stories of people losing their lives while swimming in the seas around the UK.

Some of these tragic deaths are attributed to rip tides or rip currents, as they are also known. Rip tides are strong currents of water that flow from the shore out to sea. They are powerful and quick enough to drag a person out to deeper water.

Rip currents can be challenging to spot. You can sometimes spot frothy or swirling water forming a channel from overhead, but this is more difficult to see from the shoreline.

What to do if you find yourself caught in a rip tide:

โš ๏ธ Call loudly for help.
โš ๏ธ If you have something buoyant to hold on to like an inflatable or a surfboard, keep tight hold of it.
โš ๏ธ DO NOT swim against the current towards the shore. This is often peopleโ€™s instinct, but typically people are not strong enough to swim against a rip current.
โš ๏ธ Swim parallel to the shoreline so that you swim out of the rip current and not against it.
โš ๏ธ Once the rip current is no longer pulling you, swim towards the shore. Switch to swimming parallel again if you begin to feel a pull again.
โš ๏ธ When you can stand, wade rather than try to swim to anchor your body.

Water safety at the beach tips:

โš ๏ธ Choose a beach that is patrolled and monitored by lifeguards. They will look out for rip tides and be your first responders if anything happens.
โš ๏ธ Always swim between the red and yellow flags, as this area has been designated safe to swim.
โš ๏ธ If you see a wind sock that shows a strong wind blowing in the direction of the sea, do not take inflatables into the sea as they could be dragged out to deeper water.
โš ๏ธ If you see anyone else in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

As some parts of the UK are set to experience a warm one today, we're proud to support the Children's Burns Trust in raising awareness of the importance of sun safety.

The charity's latest data shows that severe sunburn injuries to children increased by 46.5% in 2025 compared to 2024. These are not minor sunburns โ€“ they are serious injuries requiring treatment in Specialist Burns Units.

Severe sunburn can cause significant pain, long-term damage and, in some cases, require specialist medical care. That's why it's so important to take simple steps to protect children while they're enjoying the warmer weather.

โ˜€๏ธ Seek shade during the hottest part of the day
๐Ÿงข Cover up with hats, lightweight clothing and sunglasses
๐Ÿงด Apply and regularly reapply high-factor sunscreen

Together with the Children's Burns Trust and RoSPA , we're helping to raise awareness of preventable burn injuries and encourage families to stay safe in the sun.
