🚨 You don’t need to avoid bending your back
One of the most common things I hear from people with back pain is:
“I’m scared to bend because I’ll hurt my back.”
But your spine is designed to bend, twist, move and adapt.
Bending your back isn’t inherently dangerous — and avoiding it completely can sometimes make you more fearful and less confident with movement.
So what should you do?
🔹 Move gradually
If bending is painful, start with a comfortable range and gradually increase it.
🔹 Build strength
Your back becomes more capable when you progressively expose it to different movements and loads.
🔹 Change positions
There isn’t one “perfect” posture. Your back benefits from movement and variety.
🔹 Don’t panic about pain
Some discomfort during recovery doesn’t automatically mean you’ve caused damage. Your symptoms need to be considered alongside the wider picture.
Think of your back like any other part of your body:
The more you appropriately use and train it, the more capable it can become. 💪
That doesn’t
mean you should ignore severe or unexplained pain. If symptoms are persistent, worsening, or associated with significant neurological symptoms, get assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
So next time someone tells you “never bend your back”… remember: movement isn’t the enemy.
