Injured your ACL and looking to get back on the field? Dont overlook Vertical hops in your return to sport testing battery 🤸♂️✨
Great article in the BJSM a couple of months ago looking at ACLR patients who had “passed” RTS evaluations. Significant vertical hop asymmetries remain and although further research is needed around the predictive value of this, it’s a great insight as practitioners to ensure adequate soleous strengthening and an extra focus on vertical force production/kinematics to reduce some of the limb asymmetries still present (but otherwise missed using horizontal jumps + traditional tests only).
This is something I have witnessed first hand as a practitioner but also as someone who has undergone 3 ACLR’s myself. Tendon stiffness & lack of vertical force production can sometimes take over 18m+ to return to pre injury levels so ensuring you have enough plyos in your programme to encourage SSC’s and regain adequate knee flexion/ankle mobility is key. 🤙🏼🔥
