All feelings are okay đź’› This Feelings Energy Diamond helps children understand their emotions through energy.

Whether they feel high, low, or just right.

It’s not about stopping or avoiding feelings, but noticing “What am I feeling right now, and what does my body need?” supporting gentle upregulating or downregulating in a way that feels right for them.

The power of the senses

Children experience the world through their bodies first.

Somatosensory experiences are how children make sense of touch, movement, pressure and physical sensation. These experiences play a vital role in how a child develops regulation, body awareness and a sense of safety.

For some children, especially those who have experienced stress or trauma, the body can feel overwhelming or unpredictable. Sensations may feel too much, too little or difficult to interpret. This can show up in behaviour, but it begins in the nervous system.

Play therapy works with the body, not just the mind.

Through carefully attuned somatosensory play, children are supported to explore and organise their sensory experiences in a safe and relational space. This is not random play. It is meaningful, responsive and guided by the child’s needs.

In play therapy, somatosensory activities might include:

• sand, water or messy play to explore texture and sensation
• squeezing, pushing or resistance play to support proprioceptive input
• rhythmic activities such as tapping, rolling or bouncing
• use of soft materials, blankets or weighted items for deep pressure
• movement based play that supports balance and coordination

These experiences help to:

• support nervous system regulation
• build body awareness and interoception
• create a sense of safety within the body
• process sensory and emotional experiences
• develop the foundation for learning, relating and self regulation

Play therapy offers children the space to reconnect with their bodies in ways that feel safe, supported and meaningful.

So many people “doing” unrecognised courses and saying that they are a play therapist. It’s very unsafe and unethical but people are doing it.

Its ok to realise our own need to regulate and anchor.

Really helpful read for parents that often get the mum or dad guilt for reacting- your human and it’s ok.

Often all we need is a PAUSE to breathe, a gap in the noise to find ourselves so we can co-regulate with our children and hold the space until they find their calm.

Sometimes, in a tough moment, an adult sends a child away —
“Go to your room,”
“I need you to leave,”
“Just get out of my sight for a minute.”

And while it might look like the child is the one who needs space, often it’s actually our nervous system that’s overwhelmed.

This isn’t about blame.
It’s about recognising that adults need pauses too.
A breath.
A moment to settle the surge.
A chance to come back to the child with clarity instead of reactivity.

When we can acknowledge our own need for regulation, we model something powerful:
“Everyone gets overwhelmed sometimes — and everyone can take steps to come back to calm.”

It’s finally arrived 🙂 I am a Therapeutic Play Practitioner. This means I can work within a school or established organisation offering Play Therapy for children within a certain SDQ scoring.

Can’t believe I’m nearly on my last ever weekend for the Post Grad diploma to be a fully fledged Play Therapist working with the whole range of SDQ scores and challenges children face.

Loving the job every day and the amazing school and wonderful children.

A dream come true 🙂

Having rituals at home can help your child come back to balance inside. Giving the first 10 minutes to a calm lit room, a drink and a snack where you can just be together. Offer a body sock compression, a tight squeeze/cuddle, a non competitive activity like craft or read a book.

Take the first 10 minutes to fully be without distractions and see how this helps co-regulate your child after their day. For me it feels like a docking station where my child recharges on our connection ❤️ it then enables me to make dinner without the high emotions and the sibling squabbling.

I now am officially a Sand Story Therapist which I interweave into my Play Therapy. It’s a beautiful way to use sand to support a wide range of social, emotional and mental health issues. Those who know me, know I love sand and my miniatures. I think I’d be suprised if I counted how many we have in the therapy room… possible 500! 🤭
