The Dix–Hallpike manoeuvre is one of the key clinical tests used in vestibular physiotherapy to assess for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) - one of the most common causes of dizziness and vertigo.
The test works by moving the patient through specific head and body positions to reproduce symptoms and observe eye movements called nystagmus, helping identify which inner ear canal may be affected.
It was first described in 1952 by British doctors Margaret Ruth Dix and Charles Skinner Hallpike, whose work became foundational in vestibular assessment and treatment still used worldwide today.
A simple manoeuvre but a huge step forward in understanding dizziness and restoring balance for patients.
