I didn’t truly understand how broken the system was…
until it affected my own family.
My grandmother needed constant support.
But like so many others… she didn’t want a care home.
She wanted her home. Her memories. Her independence.
So we did what families do — we tried to make it work.
We paid for care.
£40 an hour… just for someone to sit with her.
She was safe.
But she wasn’t living.
She slept all day…
She was awake all night…
And slowly, she became lonely, withdrawn, and isolated.
And as a family… we were exhausted, worried, and helpless.
There had to be another way.
But local day centres had closed.
