I wrote this response to a post by a women who had been for an appointment to discuss having a VBAC, sge left feeling overwhelmed. I can no longer find the post so Im putting it here instead.
Firstly, I just want to say — a VBAC is absolutely possible 🤍
Unfortunately, many women walk into consultations hearing lots of risks without always being given the actual percentages or the full balanced picture. In many cases, the risks discussed are still considered low, and you deserve informed, evidence-based conversations rather than fear-based ones.
It’s also important to remember that vaginal birth has many benefits for both mum and baby too ✨
Babies born vaginally are more likely to benefit from:
🤍 exposure to beneficial bacteria
🤍 support with lung fluid clearance
🤍 lower rates of some respiratory difficulties
And for mums, recovery can often be gentler physically and emotionally compared to major abdominal surgery.
None of this is about saying one birth is “better” than another — it’s about you being fully informed and supported in making the choice that feels right for you 🤍
Having the right support around you can make such a difference. Having someone there to advocate for you, help you ask questions, hold space for your choices, and remind you of your strength can really help protect your birth environment and give you the best chance of the birth you want.
This is where hypnobirthing and mindset work become so powerful too ✨
So much of the preparation is about:
🌿 rebuilding trust in your body
🌿 reducing fear and outside noise
🌿 reconnecting with your instincts and inner wisdom
🌿 feeling safe enough to soften and surrender
Movement can also be incredibly important in a VBAC journey 🤍
Helping your body feel open, comfortable, relaxed, and able to flow instinctively through labour. Rocking, swaying, breathing, walking, leaning forward — all supporting baby and helping you stay connected to your body rather than trapped in fear.
And your birth partner has such an important role too ✨
They need to do the work alongside you — to trust you, hold you in your power, protect your space, and remind you of your strength when things feel overwhelming.
