St Barnabas House

St Barnabas House St Barnabas is a charity providing specialist palliative care within the hospice and the community.

St Barnabas House is the hospice for the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. Our care extends well beyond the hospice walls, with nurses visiting patients and families at home. While others might need to stay at the hospice to get help with complex symptoms. For those dealing with the impact of a recent diagnosis, there are opportunities to meet others who are on a similar journey. They can t

ake part in a range of activities from relaxation and exercise classes to gardening, art, cooking, and talking groups - helping them to live well for longer. And, when the time comes, St Barnabas is there at the end of people’s lives so they can die with dignity in a warm and caring environment. It's thanks to the generosity of the local community that all of this is possible. It costs nearly £10 million every year to provide hospice care for local people, with only 22% of this coming from government funding. You can show your support by fundraising, volunteering, taking part in a challenge event, playing the St Barnabas House lottery, or leaving a gift in your Will.

Father’s Day can be a joyful day for many, but it can also be incredibly tough when someone you love is no longer here. If you’re grieving or missing your dad today, please know you’re in our thoughts. 💙

Derrick was one of the kindest people you could meet — a devoted father with a heart of gold. In the final week of his life, he was cared for at St Barnabas House. His family made memories, shared precious moments, and stayed close by his side. ✨

“We could focus on being a family. I was even able to bring our dog in to say goodbye. That meant everything.”

— Debbie, Derrick’s wife

This Father’s Day, we’re remembering dads like Derrick, and the families who carry their love forward every day.

Derrick had a big personality and a heart of gold. He believed deeply in people and gave countless hours to volunteering.

When Derrick was diagnosed with bile duct cancer, everything changed quickly. The man who had always looked after others now needed others to look after him.

During the final week of his life, Derrick was cared for on the inpatient unit at St Barnabas. This gave him and his family the space to treasure precious moments together. To sit by his side, hold his hand and reminisce. To simply be a family. 💙

One day, Derrick’s six-year-old granddaughter Ariella came to visit. She pulled a chair up to his bed, climbed up, gently stroked his cheek and said: “Grandad, I know you can’t speak to me, but I just want you to know that I love you and I will miss you.”

Moments like this matter so much. We help families through the hardest days of their lives, allowing them to live life to the full in the time they have. 🌻

Will you help us continue to support families like Derrick’s and make precious memories possible?
