A couple weeks ago, I sprained my left wrist, so this was a great opportunity to put our handheld dynamometer to the test at Feature Physiotherapy Worthing.

We can assess the strength of different wrist movements and compare sides to identify exactly where the biggest deficits are and what needs the most attention.

It’s not just about reducing pain. Our goal is to restore strength, range of movement and function, while rebuilding confidence in using the wrist normally again.

By using objective measures like this, we can identify the areas that need work and track your progress over time.

At Feature Physiotherapy, we want your rehabilitation to be targeted and individualised, rather than based on guesswork!

A good rehab plan starts with a good assessment.

For us, that starts with a really thorough history. We want to know exactly what happened, your previous injuries, your medical history and how your symptoms are affecting you day to day.

We then carry out an objective assessment to look at things like strength, mobility, movement and any deficits around the area.

For this ankle assessment, we also used a handheld dynamometer to accurately measure strength. This gives us some really useful numbers that we can track throughout rehab and use to see how things are actually progressing.

Once we have all of that information, we can give you some clarity on what is likely contributing to your symptoms and, more importantly, what we can do about it.

From there, we build a plan around you and guide you through the rehab process, adapting things as you progress.

That’s how we like to do physio. Understand the problem, give you some clarity, then give you a plan to move forward.

Are we magicians?

Or is there a lot more to physio than meets the eye?

I reviewed a man at home the other day who was in so much back pain that he could barely move, let alone leave the house.

This week, he walked into the clinic. His pain was much, much better.

Was it because I realigned him, released something or “put his back back into place”?

No.

We did use some manual therapy, which helped ease things up, but it wasn’t the main reason for his improvement.

A big part of it was understanding his pain and identifying some of the lifestyle and movement factors that were contributing.

For example, he really struggled to stand up tall and reach down to the side.

So we broke those movements down and worked backwards, finding ways he could perform them that felt more comfortable and less threatening.

Then, gradually, we exposed him to those movements again.

The aim was to build confidence, improve his tolerance and show his brain that these movements were safe.

And that’s a huge part of what physio is about.

Getting pain down is one thing.

Building the strength, movement and resilience to stop it controlling your life is another.

Not magic.

Just good physiotherapy. đŸ’Ș

This is a hugely overlooked part of playing sport.

I know I sound like a classic physio saying you’ve got to prepare before going into a sport-specific environment, but honestly, it’s essential if you want to reduce your risk of injury.

I see so many people going into pre-season games, or starting a new season, who simply don’t have the fitness to cope with the demands of the sport yet.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with getting involved and taking part, but it does come with a higher injury risk.

Take football as an example. If you suddenly have to change direction, sprint, or land from a jump when your legs are already overtired, things don’t always end well. That’s when we often see instability injuries involving the ankle, knee, hip, or even the back.

Making sure you’re at least somewhat prepared before stepping into a competitive sporting environment is vital. You don’t need to be at peak fitness, but your body should be ready for the demands you’re about to place on it.

Even if you’re just playing a casual game of netball, you’ll probably be absolutely fine. But if you’re completely unprepared, your risk of injury is still higher.

Some preparation now can save you weeks or even months on the sidelines later.

This is an assessment of a local footballer who is returning to football after a knee injury.

We find the factors contributing to the symptoms and use a step by step approach, to progress people back to the things that they love!

Do the basics consistently well!

Let’s be honest, you can’t massage, ice bath or foam roll an injury away, and if you keep getting flare ups of pain it’s definitely worth focusing on these 3 fundamentals and making sure you’re nailing them.

A lot of people say they’re nailing them, but when we dive deeper, they’re not really.

Here at Feature Physiotherapy, we look at all of the factors that may be contributing to your pain, so that we leave no stone unturned when it comes to helping you recover!

There are so many factors that can contribute towards pain, and we’re here to help you untangle them.
