Today, 12 August, we have a solar eclipse, a rare moment of cosmic dance.
The Chinese term for a solar eclipse, 日食 (rìshí), literally translates to "the sun being eaten."
☯️ Macrocosm to Microcosm: The Cosmology of an Eclipse
In Classical Chinese Medicine and Daoist cosmology, human physiology directly mirrors the cosmos.
The Sun is Pure Yang: It represents movement, warmth, light, consciousness, the Heart (Xin), and imperial authority.
The Moon is Pure Yin: It represents stillness, cold, darkness, substance, the Kidneys (Shen), and receptive depth.
Under normal conditions, Yin and Yang interdepend and nourish one another. But during a solar eclipse, Yin momentarily overpowers Yang in broad daylight.
🥁 Pots, Drums, and the Celestial Dog
Imagine living thousands of years ago, looking up and watching the source of all earthly life disappear.
In Chinese folklore, a celestial beast, often pictured as a Heavenly Dog (Tiāngǒu, 天狗) or a Dragon, was thought to be taking giant, greedy bites out of the sun.
People would rush outside, beating drums and gongs, setting off firecrackers and shouting at the sky to frighten the creature away and make it release the Sun.
👑 The Imperial Court and the Astronomers
For the Imperial Court, eclipses were profound warnings. A solar eclipse signaled a disruption in cosmic harmony.
When an eclipse approached the Emperor would fast and retreat to quiet contemplation. He would lead his court to beat drums and shoot arrows at the sky to aid the Sun.
Court astronomers held sacred duties.
The Book of Documents (Shangshu, 尚书) tells the famous story of the court astronomers Xi and He, who failed to predict an unexpected eclipse, reportedly because they had been drinking. Their punishment was said to be ex*****on.
🌿 ☯️ Dynamic Equilibrium & The Art of Looking Inward
An eclipse is a beautiful reminder that Yin and Yang are never static.
For a moment, Yin obscures the great source of Yang, the Sun. But the shadow passes. The Sun returns.
In clinic, we see the same cycle: pathology can be a temporary disruption, with one force eclipsing another as Yin Cold obscuring Yang, or Liver Yang overwhelming Yin.
Health is not static perfection, but the ability to move through disruption and return to centre.
Happy eclipse watching, and don't forget your eclipse glasses! 🕶️☀️🌑
