A little autumn health check 🍂

With a new season beginning, it’s a good time to have a quick look through the medicine cupboard at home.

Check that any regular medicines and inhalers are in date, you have enough of anything you rely on, and that things like your thermometer and basic first-aid supplies are still where you expect them to be.

It’s also worth safely returning any unwanted or expired medicines to your local pharmacy rather than putting them in the bin or flushing them away.

A five-minute check now can save a bit of hassle when the inevitable autumn bugs arrive!

If your child has asthma, the start of a new school year is a good time for a quick check that everything is in place.

Make sure:

- Their inhalers are in date and have enough doses left
- School has the inhaler and spacer they need
- Their asthma action plan is up to date and shared with school
- They know how and when to use their inhaler
- Their annual asthma review is booked if it’s due

Asthma attacks in children tend to increase after the return to school in September, so a little preparation now can make a real difference.

Can you believe it’s a new school year already?

For lots of families, September means getting back into routines. A few simple things can help make the transition a little easier:

- Getting back into a regular sleep routine
- Starting the day with a healthy breakfast
- Remembering water bottles
- Encouraging good handwashing
- Checking any regular medication or inhalers needed at school are up to date

And don’t forget that starting a new term can feel like a big change too, so it’s worth checking in on how children are feeling as they settle back in.
