Although IBS is often talked about as a standalone condition, it's essentially an umbrella term of different symptoms.

There are several presentations of IBS. These subtypes include IBS-C, IBS-D and IBS-M, Each one is referred to after a certain set of gastrointestinal problems.

IBS-C: If you suffer from IBS-C, you may have fewer bowel movements than usual and may strain to go. Stomach cramps and belching
can all be symptoms of IBS-C, along with gas and bloating.

IBS-D: With IBS-D, more than a quarter of stools on your abnormal bowel movement days are loose, while less than a quarter are hard and lumpy. If you have ISB-D, you may feel like you need to go to the toilet more frequently.

IBS-M can result in a variety of symptoms. You may find that your symptoms alternate between causing constipation and diarrhoea.

Different forms of IBS can cause a wide range of symptoms; identifying the type you have is an important step to getting effective treatment.

A registered dietician can help you make sense of your symptoms and focus in on the best course of treatment.
