Mysore style is the traditional method of practicing Ashtanga Yoga and is an adaptable, progressive approach that can be modified to suit students throughout the course of their lives. Students practice together in the same room but move through the sequence at their own pace, receiving individual guidance from the teacher. It’s a one-to-one class in a group setting.

But what does that mean? Well, this morning we had a mix of approaches, all valuable and appropriate to the individual student, because one size does not fit all…

❤️ One student arrived at 6.00 and stayed the full two hours, taking time out when needed to build resilience not just for the physical practice, but for everyday life. Her practice ended with a long savasana and renewed energy for the day.

🧡 Another student arrived later, adapting her practice to support her recovery from a chesty cough. Focussing on creating space to breathe and skipping inversions worked well.

💛 Another student arrived at 7.30, dressed for an interview and carrying a meditation cushion. We set up a timer and she used the space for quiet sitting practice to prepare for the day. (Hope the interview went well!)

Whatever you need, you already have. Our Mysore room is a space for you to find yourself again. Come and join us.

Join us for our next Community Sunday event on 31st May, 9.00-11.30.

A morning of community and connection through sitting practice, chanting, and asana practice. We will begin with a short guided meditation followed by time to explore another aspect of the practice, the chanting of mantra. This month we'll look at the rich meaning behind the Ashtanga opening invocation.

We'll then move into our movement practice, with a guided journey through sun salutations and standing postures, up to the end of the warrior sequence. At this point you are free to continue your practice, move to closing postures or take rest. There will be time for herbal tea and a catch up at the end.

Some yoga experience will be helpful, but you don't need to have an established Ashtanga practice to join us.

To be honest, I'd hoped I'd never get this far as the seven headstands at the end of Ashtanga Intermediate Series looked impossible to me. But here I am, a few weeks after being introduced to this ridiculous challenge by Joey Miles, I'm spending my Sunday morning playing at the edge of my fear.

This has been one of the big take aways from nearly eight years of practice - I can do things I thought were impossible, I just need to show up, be consistent, and believe in myself. All really challenging things in themselves, but you can start small and see how you go.

I'm not young, strong, a gymnast...I'm a very ordinary woman choosing to live life with fewer bu****it boundaries.

Over the next few months I'll be teaching some workshops with my fabulous friend Alexandra Cross - we'll be exploring how to overcome fear and the stories we tell ourselves about our abilities. We start on 12th April with arm balances.

You can also practice with me in York, get in touch with any questions.

And yes, if you've know me a long time, I'm wearing the Sonic Youth t-shirt you saw me living in 35 years ago! ❤️

The beginning of 2026 has been one of the most rewarding periods of my life, holding space for community and exploration in regular Mysore-style classes. The response has been so heartwarming and humbling. 🙏🏻

Thursday mornings have regularly been fully booked so I'm moving my Monday morning class to Clementhorpe Community Centre to provide an additional opportunity for students to practice in the Mysore room. ❤️

First Monday Mysore on 13th April. 🌟

Guided classes will be pop-up, keep an eye out for dates.
