Trust isn't built through grand declarations. It's built through four things repeated consistently over time.

Consistency means their words match their actions and their effort doesn't spike and crash. Transparency means they share openly, you can ask questions without them getting defensive, and you feel like you know who they actually are. Accountability means they own mistakes without deflecting and they actually change behavior instead of just apologizing repeatedly. And reliability means they show up when they say they will, especially during hard times, not just easy ones.

Trust isn't a feeling. It's a pattern. And you can evaluate it by paying attention to these four things.

We are delighted to announce we are piloting Dads Unfiltered in York!

A peer support group, facilitated by a dad who also happens to be a therapist. The aim is to encourage open conversations about the challenges of fatherhood, whilst building a community.

We understand there is still a lot of stigma around men’s mental health and opening up, so let’s break that cycle!

The first session will take place on Sunday 6th Sep, 9.30am-11.30am, and costs £10. It will take place in the gorgeous Pavilion Building situated in the picturesque Homestead Park in York.

Dads are welcome to come on their own or bring their babies who aren’t yet crawling or toddling.

Neither Hattie nor Dolly (who run Mums Unfiltered) will be there, it’ll just be dads!

Please share far and wide, and if you’d like to join please send us a DM or drop an email to [email protected].

One of the biggest myths about EMDR is that it makes you forget what happened.

It doesn't.

If that were the goal, we'd all have amnesia, not healing.

Trauma isn't the memory itself.

It's that the memory got stuck in your brain and nervous system in "survival mode."

So every time something reminds you of it, your body reacts like the danger is happening right now.

That's why you can logically know you're safe while your heart is racing, your stomach drops, or you suddenly want to run, shut down, or people please.

Your thinking brain got the memo.

Your nervous system didn't.

EMDR helps your brain finish processing what got interrupted.

As the memory gets integrated:
Your alarm system stops acting like every reminder is an emergency.
Your emotional intensity comes down.
Your thinking brain comes back online.
The memory becomes part of your story instead of hijacking your present.

You still remember what happened.

It just stops running your life.

That's the difference.

Healing isn't forgetting.

Healing is remembering without your nervous system acting like it's happening all over again.

Some arguments are not really about “who started it.”

They become a pattern.

One person feels powerless.
One person jumps in to fix everything.
One person blames, criticises or tries to control.

And before anyone realises it, everyone is stuck in the same conflict cycle: victim, rescuer, persecutor.

The hardest part? We can move between these roles without meaning to. The rescuer becomes resentful. The victim becomes angry. The person blaming others later feels hurt and misunderstood.

That is why healthier communication starts with awareness, not shame.

Before the next argument grows, pause and ask:

Am I taking responsibility for my part?
Am I helping, or taking over?
Am I asking for support, or giving away my power?
Am I being honest and respectful, or blaming?
Am I looking for a solution, or trying to win?

Conflict changes when people stop playing roles and start speaking clearly.

Boundaries matter.
Accountability matters.
Respect matters.
And sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is, “Let’s talk about this differently.”

What is the “Empty Boat Theory”?

Think of it as a thought experiment. Imagine yourself on a boat in the middle of a lake, as another boat drifts towards you, threatening to knock right into you. The closer this incoming vessel gets, the angrier you become.

Then, at the last second, you steer your boat out from the path of collision, only to notice that the other boat is empty. What this really puts into perspective, as popular TikToker Sean of hte Living puts it, is “There was never anybody to be angry with in the first place.”

“That’s life, isn’t it?”he says. “We assume everything’s about us. ‘They’re just doing that to screw me, to p**s me off. Most of the time, nobody’s thinking about you.”

How much self-inflicted suffering comes simply from the stories we tell ourselves about other people's attitudes towards us? Go deeper into the parable and its origins below.
