DON’T HESITATE, DON’T DISCRIMINATE. CPR SAVES LIVES.
We need to talk about something that can make people uncomfortable — because that discomfort may be costing lives.
Women who suffer a cardiac arrest are less likely to receive bystander CPR than men.
One of the barriers identified is hesitation around the female chest.
People can worry about touching or exposing a woman’s breasts. Others fear being accused of inappropriate contact or s*xual assault.
But in a cardiac arrest, breasts do not change the treatment.
If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, they need immediate lifesaving intervention.
📞 Call 999.
❤️ Start CPR.
⚡ Get an AED.
If an AED is available, the chest needs to be sufficiently exposed for the pads to be positioned correctly. Clothing or a bra may need to be moved, cut or removed to allow effective treatment.
That isn’t s*xual.
That is lifesaving first aid.
Of course, dignity still matters. Protect someone’s privacy wherever reasonably possible and expose only what is necessary.
But dignity should never become a reason to delay CPR or defibrillation.
And fear of a false allegation should not prevent someone from trying to save another person’s life.
When a heart has stopped, it doesn’t matter whether the chest belongs to a man or a woman.
The person in front of you needs help.
