I got back on Sunday from a lovely long weekend in Palma with my girl friends. Sunshine, laughter, good food, and the rare opportunity to remember who I am outside of work and parenting.
In fact, it may well have been my last proper bit of “me time” until September.
Because yesterday my eldest also finished his final GCSE exam and, somewhere between unpacking my suitcase and putting a wash on, I had a sudden realisation: for the next three months I will no longer just be a therapist, business owner, wife and mum…
I will be a taxi driver.
The exams are over, school is finished (for at least one of my brood!), and apparently every teenager’s social life now requires transportation at all hours of the day. Add in work appointments, family commitments and the small matter of Results Day, and the summer diary is looking... busy.
As parents, we spend years helping our children prepare for big transitions. We talk about managing stress, coping with change and embracing new opportunities. What nobody really prepares us for is the strange mix of pride, relief, excitement and mild panic that comes with watching them take their next steps towards adulthood.
It’s a reminder that transitions affect all of us. Even positive changes can bring uncertainty, shifting routines and unexpected emotions.
So while I prepare for a summer of chauffeuring, calendar juggling and hearing “Can you just drop me off...” more times than I can count, I’m also reminding myself of something I often discuss with clients: when life gets busy, don’t stop looking for the moments that refill your own cup.
They might not be a long weekend in Palma. They might be a quiet coffee, a walk, a moment with a book, an hour on the Green Room Therapies couch, or simply saying no to something.
Because if the next three months are anything like I’m imagining, I’m going to need all the refuelling I can get.
Now, if anyone needs me, I’ll be checking my fuel gauge and wondering whether I should charge my teenager by the mile.
See you on the other side!
