It may have been raining for part of the day but that didn't make any difference. More people than ever attended our Volunteers' Week 2026 BBQ with York In Recovery this year to find out more about Inclusive Recovery Cities.

Thanks to our great chefs who did an amazing job - many positive comments passed about the great food! 🥰

Thanks to Booker in York for their donation and to the York Butchers' Gild who through Voakes Pies and Wilsons Of York most generously supplied the delicious burgers and sausage which were enjoyed by all. 🥰

Of course thanks too to all the volunteers who give their time to CGL, York in Recovery and other organisations across the city to help those in addiction.

Let's keep breaking that stigma down and removing the ignorance which still persists that addiction is a choice.

It's Volunteers' Week this week!

We want to say a great big thank you to those who give their time to us so freely.

Time is precious - it is said that it's the only thing we have that we can never get back once it's gone - which is why we appreciate the time which our volunteers give so very much.

This week we have our BBQ with York In Recovery and, before the end of June, we also have an escape room booked with some pizza to say a very well deserved and sincere 'Thank you!' to those who volunteer with us here in York.

As our Volunteers' Week BBQ approaches on Wednesday we'd like to give a big shout out to Voakes Pies and Wilsons Of York who, thanks to the generosity of the York Butchers Gild, are once again very kindly donating the Sausage and burgers which will fill up our lovely volunteers and visitors this week.

We’re incredibly proud to share that Believe in People has been nominated for a BBC Humberside Make a Difference Award for 2026!

To even be considered for an award like this means a huge amount to us, because this podcast was never created for headlines or attention, but it was created to give people a voice.

What started inside a recovery service in Hull has grown into conversations heard across the UK and beyond, but the heart of it has always stayed the same: honest stories, real people, and reducing the stigma around addiction, trauma, recovery and mental health.

Reading the nomination honestly stopped us in our tracks. The words about people feeling understood, less alone, and more hopeful after listening are exactly why we do this.

Thank you to everybody who has listened, shared an episode, trusted us with their story, supported the podcast, or recommended it to somebody who needed it.

And thank you to whoever nominated us. Truly. This belongs to the community! 💜

Last month the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) moved legacy benefits (tax credits, jobseekers allowance etc) over to Universal Credit. As a result, some people living in England who used to receive free prescriptions will now have to pay.

This means some people who are prescribed by our services may need to pay for their prescriptions and may not know it.

If you are picking up a prescription and are unsure if you’re eligible for support, ask the pharmacy staff for help. You can also ask for a FP57 receipt and refund form. This will allow you to claim a refund at a later date if you are entitled.

This volunteers' week we rightly celebrate those who give their time to the recovery sector in York.

Our focus this year is also on York's bid to become an inclusive recovery city.
