From My Desk
I’ve always loved experimentation. Different hairstyles, colours, wigs, weaves, braids, you name it. So when I decided to transition from permed hair to my natural hair, I was excited. Then, because apparently I cannot leave well enough alone, I decided to try Jheri curls.
A friend recommended a woman who had been doing them for twenty years. I trusted her completely and let her buy the products.
Except the product she used had expired.
The result? My hair ended up partly permed and partly something else entirely. Definitely not the Jheri curls I had imagined.
I laughed about it eventually, but it got me thinking. Perhaps there are some things we don’t need to keep experimenting with. Perhaps consistency deserves a little more respect.
I’m still going to experiment. There will be wigs, weaves, colours and different looks. I know myself.
But my natural hair?
It is now under new management.
Let it grow. Let it be healthy. Let it be strong.
Apparently, even a spontaneous person needs to know when to stop experimenting.
Once bitten, twice shy.
