A colorectal hemorrhage is bleeding that comes from the colon (large intestine) or re**um, the last parts of the digestive tract. The amount of bleeding can range from a small amount that only shows up on a stool test to severe bleeding that requires emergency treatment.

Common signs include:

- Bright red blood on the toilet paper, in the toilet bowl, or mixed with stool (often from the re**um or lower colon)

- Maroon-colored stool (can indicate bleeding higher up in the colon)

- Black, tarry stools are usually caused by bleeding higher in the digestive tract, but occasionally can occur with slower bleeding from the right side of the colon.

- Dizziness, weakness, lightheadedness, or fainting if the blood loss is significant

- Abdominal pain or cramping
