Most breast lumps are not cancer, but you cannot know what a change means by touch alone.

A new lump, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling or redness, ni**le changes, and swelling around the armpit or collarbone are all worth checking.

Some breast changes can be painless, so waiting for discomfort before speaking to a doctor may delay important assessment.

Breast cancer happens when cells in the breast grow out of control and form a tumour, most often beginning in the milk ducts or milk-producing glands.

It can affect women at any age after puberty, and men can develop breast cancer too, accounting for up to 1 in 100 cases.

Screening means looking for breast cancer before symptoms appear through methods such as a breast exam, ultrasound, or mammogram depending on your age and risk.
