Test your knowledge about breast ultrasound
with these simple questions.
1. What is the most effective way to screen the breast for cancer?
Ans: Mammography. However, for young women, breast ultrasound is safer and can identify some problems that are missed on Mammography.
2. Is breast Ultrasound painful.
Ans: No. Not at all. A gel will be applied to the breast and a smooth probe will be moved around the breast.
3. Is breast ultrasound done for older women alone or for young girls too?
Ans: Some women get breast cancer at a young age, even in their twenties. Therefore breast screening, including breast ultrasound should begin early to help diagnose breast cancer before it gets too late. When you feel a lump in the breast or note an unexplained change in the texture of your breast, you definitely will need an ultrasound.
4. Is breast ultrasound safe for young girls too?
Ans: Yes. Ultrasound is safe for all women. Mammography uses radiation and therefore has a very small risk of causing cancer. Ultrasound however uses sound and does not cause cancer.
5. Can pregnant or breastfeeding women do breast ultrasound?
Answer? Yes. Ultrasound is safe for the pregnant woman and generally safe for the unborn child at all stages of development.
5. Does breast ultrasound cause cancer?
Ans: No. Ultrasound does not use ionising radiation and does not cause cancer.
6. How frequently should I do breast ultrasound?
Ans: Currently, there are no standard recommendations for breast screening with ultrasound. However, yearly breast scans will be safe.
7. Do I still need breast ultrasound if I do regular self breast examination and my breasts have recently been examined by a health care worker?
Ans: Yes. Breast ultrasound can see many breast problems that human hands cannot detect.
8. Is mammography better than breast ultrasound?
Ans: The two procedures are complementary. For younger women with dense breasts however, breast ultrasound can see many problems that are missed on mammography.
9. Should I do breast ultrasound if I have a family history of breast cancer?
Ans: Yes. But you might also need mammography at an earlier age as well.
10. Which month is dedicated every year for breast Awareness? And which day of that month is designated as "No bra day"?

October 13 is "No Bra day".
