Hi, welcome to Poka Reads! where we explore stories about African women, past, present and future.

is an initiative of Poka Health, a period tracker and women’s health app that’s designed for African women. If you don’t already have the app, you can download it now from your app store where for the next three months you can enjoy all the benefits of Poka Premium. Yes, you heard me right. Poka Premium, our paid subscription service, is free for three months when you download the app.

Back to Poka Reads … this month we took a journey to the Cape in the Southernmost past of Africa, that is to say, we read Cape Fever by the award winning South African novelist, Nadia Davids. We will soon find out if we should have stayed a little closer to home.

Cape Fever is described as a gothic psychological thriller set in the 1920s, in an unnamed colonial empire… we can only assume South Africa, where a young maid finds herself entangled with the spirits of a decaying manor and the secrets of its enigmatic owner.

[A Pokadolls Meetup] đź’« Last Saturday, some of our community members came together for a morning of pilates, intention setting and conversation at .move studio. The event was a reminder of how powerful it is when women gather with softness, honesty, and intention.

Between movement, conversation, nourishing food, and shared reflections, we created space to slow down, reconnect with our bodies, and speak openly about our experiences as women.

At Poka, our mission has always been bigger than period tracking. We believe African women deserve spaces where their experiences are centered, their questions are welcomed, and their well-being is approached holistically. We believe:

Community matters. Conversation matters. Safe spaces for African women matter. 🤍

Thank you to everyone who joined us— more intentional gatherings to come ✨ See you at the next one!
