The 33-bed Eye Care and Surgical Training Centre of Excellence was commissioned to strengthen specialized eye care services and training in Ghana. The modern facility, valued at about $4 million, and is equipped with modern operating theatres and advanced diagnostic equipment to support the treatment of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and other complex eye conditions.
Commissioning the facility on behalf of the government, Prof. Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah noted that cataract remains one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in Ghana and highlighted the importance of expanding access to timely surgical care. The Central Regional Minister, Hon. Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah commended the partners who supported the project and urged that the facility be well maintained to ensure quality service delivery.
The Chief Executive Officer of Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Dr. Eric Kofi Ngyedu, stated that the center would strengthen the hospitalโs capacity to provide safe, timely and specialized ophthalmological care while supporting training and research.
The project was supported by partners including USAID, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Cure Blindness Project, whose CEO K.T. Overbey described the center as a life-changing investment that will help access to quality eye care and reduce preventable blindness.
The facility is expected to serve as a referral hub for the Central, Western and Western North Regions, improving access to specialized eye care services for many communities.
