HEALTH BULLETIN
The Global Cruise Ship Outbreak (MV Hondius)
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are tracking a cluster of severe acute respiratory illnesses stemming from the MV Hondius cruise ship.
Case Count:
There are 11 total cases linked to the ship worldwide, which includes 8 laboratory-confirmed cases, 2 probable cases, and 3 deaths.
The Strain:
This outbreak is caused by the Andes virus (ANDV) strain, native to South America. It is highly unique because it is the only hantavirus strain known to spread through close, person-to-person contact once symptoms begin.
The Upstate New York Case (Ontario County)
The suspected case involving a Geneva High School student in Ontario County, NY, is entirely isolated and locally acquired.
How It Spreads:
Hantavirus is typically contracted by inhaling aerosolized urine, f***s, or saliva from infected rodents. The Andes strain can also spread through close, prolonged person-to-person contact. It does not spread easily and is not airborne like the flu.
Symptoms: HPS symptoms typically appear 1 to 6 weeks after exposure and start as flu-like, including fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, before rapidly progressing to respiratory distress.
Prevention: There is no specific treatment or vaccine. Preventative measures include avoiding areas with rodent infestations and practicing strict hygiene if cleaning up droppings.
