REMINDER!✨
Join us on September 18th at 10:00 AM PT for a special presentation hosted by the Airmid Institute, titled “Palo Santo, the Sacred Wood of Ecuador: Challenges and the Key Role of Indigenous Traditions and Conservation Efforts."
This webinar, open to the public✨, will feature panelists from Ecuador, Rafael Parducci V and Ivonne Mosler, who will share their insights on the cultural and ecological importance of Palo Santo. Dominique Gaillard will present in collaboration with Rafael and Ivonne, offering a deep dive into the challenges faced in conserving this sacred wood and the crucial role that Indigenous traditions play in its preservation. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from experts and explore the significance of Palo Santo in Ecuador.
Palo santo “Bursera graveolens” is native to the dry tropical forests of Latin America, particularly in Ecuador and Peru, where it holds significant cultural, spiritual, and medicinal importance among Indigenous communities. The tree is known for its aromatic wood, used in traditional rituals for purification and healing. Its biology is characterized by a deciduous nature, deep root systems, and the production of aromatic compounds that enhance the quality of its wood and oil.
However, although palo santo is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, it faces threats from habitat loss and overharvesting, prompting conservation efforts that include sustainable harvesting practices, reforestation, and international regulations to ensure its preservation and ethical trade. These efforts are informed by the work of Ecuadorians Rafael Paducci and Ivonne Mosler, who have pioneered sustainable practices and collaborated closely with Indigenous communities to protect and utilize palo santo responsibly.
➡️Rafael Parducci V., with 23 years of experience in essential oil distillation in Ecuador, has explored and researched numerous plants, discovering new essential oils, scents, hydrosols, and medicinal elixirs. His work combines his passion for nature with shamanic knowledge, living for 13 years in the Amazon where he transforms plant power into pure gold. Parducci collaborates with the Kiwcha ethnic group and the Ministry of Environment on a project covering 60,000 hectares to protect the Amazon ecosystem. This initiative focuses on empowering Amazonian women through the sustainable cultivation of aromatic and medicinal plants, fostering both economic independence and environmental conservation.
➡️ Ivonne Mosler, an advocate for Amazonian biodiversity, has focused on promoting sustainable practices in Ecuador's tropical dry forests for the past decade. She plays a key role in the "Resilience to Climate Change" project, aiming to conserve Palo Santo forests while enhancing local communities' quality of life through sustainable forest management. Mosler integrates conservation with social and economic development, ensuring communities benefit from preserving their natural resources. Her work includes reforestation efforts with local communities and universities, advocating for sustainable palo santo harvesting, and driving the development of a climate-resilient bio-industry in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
➡️ Dominique Gaillard, born in rural France, is an aromatherapist and natural skincare specialist. Influenced by her gardener father and herbalist Maurice Messegue, she developed a deep connection with nature. Her journey into aromatherapy began in her thirties, exploring essential oils for her children's health. In 2011, Dominique moved to Quebec, launching her product line, Quintessential, and specializing in natural dermocosmetics and oleotherapy. Her collaboration with ZAYAT AROMA and guidance from natural perfumer Nicolas De Barry deepened her focus on the emotional effects of essential oils, emphasizing their transformative impact on emotions, trauma healing, and mental health.
