Did you know human milk has a "secret ingredient" that isn't even for the baby to digest?
Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are the third-largest solid component of breast milk, right after lactose and fat, yet babies can't digest them at all. So what are they for?
They're food for the right bacteria.
HMOs pass straight through baby's stomach undigested and reach the large intestine intact, where they act as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium while starving out troublemakers like E. coli and C. difficile, which can't use HMOs as fuel at all.
Here's what recent research highlights about what HMOs do for baby:
They feed the good guys. Bifidobacterium species (especially B. infantis) are uniquely equipped to break down HMOs, and they dominate the gut of breastfed babies.
They act as decoys. Many viruses and bacteria (rotavirus, norovirus, RSV, certain E. coli strains) try to attach to sugar structures on baby's gut lining to cause infection. HMOs look enough like those structures that pathogens latch onto the HMO instead, and get carried out in the diaper rather than causing illness.
They shape gut chemistry. As beneficial bacteria ferment HMOs, they produce short-chain fatty acids that keep the gut acidic and inhospitable to pathogens, strengthen the gut lining, and support healthy immune development.
They matter most for the most vulnerable babies. Research on preterm infants links certain HMOs to a lower risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a serious intestinal condition - one more reason milk banks and donor milk matter for NICU families.
Every ounce of human milk brings these benefits. This research is one more piece of the "why" behind the support you're providing to lactating families.
