The Ministry of Human Services and Social Securityโ€™s โ€œEmbraceโ€ platform is a free, confidential, and professional national online mental health and therapy platform designed to address a wide range of counselling needs across Guyana.

The platform link will be available on the Ministryโ€™s page and website on Friday, August 21, 2026.

Embrace is designed to address long-term mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression, as well as provide support to persons affected by domestic violence, family violence, and abuse.

The platform will complement the various forms of in-person counselling already provided by the Government of Guyana, including support for families affected by the MV Barima tragedy.

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security emphasises that the services offered through the online platform do not replace the in-person counselling, care, and support being provided to families affected by the MV Barima tragedy.

While Embrace expands access to mental health services, the platform is intended to strengthen existing face-to-face counselling systems, ensuring that in-person support remains a primary and accessible form of care for communities across Guyana.

Meanwhile, comprehensive, on-the-ground counselling, which began immediately following the tragedy, continues.

Counsellors, social workers, and psychologists are deployed within the HEART Initiative regional units. Every affected family has been assigned dedicated social workers and mental health professionals who maintain continuous contact through home visits, targeted regional counselling hubs, and telephone outreach.

The ongoing in-person relief efforts bring together specialists from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, the Ministry of Health, the University of Guyana, and the Guyana Association of Professional Social Workers, with continued support from the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).

Through the Embrace online platform, the Government of Guyana is also utilising the expertise of local independent providers and volunteers from the diaspora. These specialists bring focused expertise in grief counselling, trauma therapy, and specialised psychological support to the platform.

A Calling, Not Just a Career: Nurse Gabrielle Spencer

For Nurse Gabrielle Spencer, nursing is much more than a career; it's a calling rooted in empathy, faith, and lived experience. With nearly a decade as a registered nurse, Gabrielleโ€™s journey into healthcare was shaped long before she ever donned a uniform. In 2012, she was once a patient herself after an accident that left her with a broken ankle and required two surgeries. During that hospital stay, the compassion and care she received from nurses left a lasting impression. It was then that she knew she wanted to be on the other side of care, offering comfort, reassurance, and healing to others.

As she nears ten years in the profession, Gabrielle describes her experience as profoundly fulfilling. While she admits there are moments when the demands of nursing cause her to pause and reflect, she is clear about the difference between a job and a calling. As a Christian, she believes her purpose is to help people, and nursing enables her to live that purpose every day. Because of this, the long hours and high-pressure environment do not drain her; instead, they reinforce why she chose this path.

Now serving at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Gabrielle brings not only skill but also compassion to the emergency department. Having recently returned to Guyana after spending time abroad, she views her role with fresh appreciation. Even during demanding periods, such as the Christmas season, when many would prefer to be at home, she willingly works. For her, being present on Christmas Day is an opportunity to support patients with nowhere else to turn and to give colleagues with children the chance to be with their families.

Gabrielleโ€™s approach to care is rooted in a simple yet powerful principle: kindness. Working in an environment where emotions often run high, she has observed how quickly situations can escalate when frustration replaces empathy. Her message to patients and the wider public is clear: everyone bears something unseen. A calm word, a respectful tone, or a simple question like โ€œAre you okay?โ€ can make all the difference.

Through her quiet dedication, Nurse Gabrielle Spencer reminds us that healthcare is not only about treatment and procedures but also about human connection. In every shift she works, she continues to honour the compassion once shown to her, paying it forward, one patient at a time.
