Linden Hospital Complex The Mackenzie Hospital was opened on May 23, 1925 by the then Governor of British Guiana, His Excellency, Sir Graeme Thomson K.C.B. R.

The complex comprises of three hospitals, Kwakwani Hospital, Upper Demerara Hospital (Wismar) and Linden Hospital Complex The complex comprises of three hospitals, Kwakwani Hospital, Upper Demerara Hospital (Wismar) and Linden Hospital Complex (Mackenzie).The three hospitals were managed over the years by GUYBAU, Guymine and Linmine. However, in 1993, as part of the process of delinking the responsibility for social services from Linmine, the hospitals were transferred to the management of BIDCO, The Holding Company for the two State run bauxite companies, Linmine and Bermine. BIDCO undertook to transfer the Hospital to the Government of Guyana administered by the Ministry of Health. The hospital was transferred to the Ministry of Health from September 01, 1996.On August 01, 1998, the Ministry of Health and Labour appointed a Management Committee to administer the Hospital

Construction of the state-of-the- art hospital began in August, 2006 at an approximate cost of one billion nine hundred and sixteen million and six hundred thousand ($1,916,600,000) The plan for the existing structure was drawn by Louis Berger Incorporated. The project was funded by the Health Sector Programme (HSP) and co-financed by the International Development Bank (IDB) in collaboration with Government of Guyana. The building was officially opened on the 2nd December, 2009. Bassoo and Sons Construction Company was responsible for construction of the magnificent structure that stands today as a testimony of our Government’s commitment to improving the health sector in Guyana. The new facility offers services such as:

• Rehabilitation services including physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy and audiology

• Laboratory services for several types of testing including blood sugar, cholesterol, kidney and liver function, malaria, dengue fever and others.

• Emergency services

• Outpatient services including; dermatology clinic, medical clinic, dental clinic, psychiatric clinic. Surgical clinic, gynecology clinic, VIA clinic, sickle cell and normal clinic and pediatric clinic.

• Pharmacy

• Radiology

• Optometry and low vision department

👂🏽 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃 𝐀 𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄 𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐑! 💙

The Audiology Department of the Linden Hospital Rehabilitation Department has taken another meaningful step toward improving the quality of life for persons living with hearing loss, with the acquisition of forty (40) hearing aids for individuals with varying degrees of hearing impairment.

Today, the Department officially launched its mini hearing aid distribution, with twenty-one (21) recipients receiving hearing aids during the first phase of the initiative. Recipients range from school-aged children to senior citizens, highlighting the importance of accessible hearing care at every stage of life.

For many, better hearing means improved communication, greater participation in school, work and family life, and increased confidence in everyday interactions. 🦻🏽✨

The Linden Hospital Complex is proud of the Audiology team and its continued commitment to providing specialized rehabilitation services and making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients across Region 10.

On Friday 21st August 2026, the Linden Hospital Complex hosted an appreciation session to recognize the 𝟐𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐞 as they concluded their one-year mission at our institution.

Over the past year, the members of the Brigade shared their knowledge, skills, expertise, and compassion with our healthcare team and the patients we serve. Their contribution has been invaluable, and their presence has strengthened collaboration and cultural exchange within the Linden Hospital Complex.

As they return home, we extend our sincere gratitude to each member of the Brigade for their dedication, professionalism, and service to our community. While their one-year stint may have come to an end, the impact of their work and the memories created will remain with us.

Prioritising Breastfeeding Through Knowledge & Support

In observance of International Breastfeeding Week 2026, healthcare professionals from Linden Hospital Complex participated in a breastfeeding workshop held at the Charles Roza School of Nursing.

Under the theme “Prioritise Breastfeeding – Create Sustainable Support System,”
the workshop focused on strengthening the knowledge and skills of clinical staff to better promote, support and encourage breastfeeding among mothers.

Participants explored several important areas, including the impact of birth practices, postnatal practices that support breastfeeding, milk supply challenges, and challenges to breastfeeding and alternative feeding methods.

The session was facilitated by

Jennifer Melville Nelson – RN, RM, JDS, Regional Breastfeeding Coordinator/Monitor;

Keisha Moore – Health Visitor/Breastfeeding Monitor;

Sheniza Liverpool – RN, RM, Breastfeeding Advocate.

Through continued education and capacity-building, Linden Hospital Complex remains committed to equipping its healthcare professionals with the tools needed to provide informed, compassionate and effective breastfeeding support to mothers and their babies.
