☀️ Yang Sheng in Hong Kong’s Summer Heat
Clearing Heat & Transforming Dampness
After 35+ years in clinic, I see the same pattern every summer in Hong Kong without fail:
Intense heat + heavy humidity → shu re jia shi (summer-heat mixed with dampness)
→ heavy limbs, sticky fatigue, poor appetite, alternating loose stools or constipation, thick greasy tongue coating, and a mind that feels cloudy.
Yang sheng (養生) doesn’t fight the season. It gently guides the body to stay in harmony with it. Here are the five practices I recommend most often:
🌿 1. Rise & rest with the sun
Wake a little earlier and rest 20–30 minutes at
midday. Meeting the rising Yang Qi supports the Heart and protects the Shen. A short rest is classical yang sheng — not laziness.
🥗 2. Eat light, cool & slightly bitter
Choose winter melon, mung bean, job’s tears, adzuki bean, cucumber, lotus leaf, and chrysanthemum.
Avoid ice-cold drinks and too many raw salads — they trap dampness. Prefer warm or room-temperature herbal teas instead.
🚶 3. Move gently, sweat lightly
Early morning or evening walks, slow swimming, Tai Chi or Baduanjin. Aim for a light, even sweat, then rinse with warm water and change into dry clothes. Never let sweat dry cold on the skin.
🫚 4. Keep the centre strong
The Spleen is easily injured by summer
dampness. A few slices of fresh ginger in morning tea or a little dried tangerine peel in cooking gently awakens the middle burner and prevents many digestive issues.
🌙 5. Calm the Heart & settle the Shen
Summer belongs to Fire. A short evening foot soak with mint or chrysanthemum, or 10 quiet minutes of slow breathing into the lower abdomen, helps Yang Qi descend and the mind settle.
These habits are quiet and consistent. When followed, most people notice clearer energy, more comfortable digestion, and the heavy, sticky feeling of summer begins to lift.
