Veterinary Specialty Hospital of Hong Kong (VSH Hong Kong) has been formed to bring genuine, specialty referral and 24-hour emergency medicine to Hong Kong’s veterinary community, with a philosophy based on a model of referral practice in North America and Australia. Specialty and emergency centers can and should serve as an essential resource for local practitioners who request specialized or emergency care for complex medical problems in their patients. VSH Hong Kong aims to act as a collaborative partner and colleague to the community of family veterinary practitioners in Hong Kong. Importantly, the specialists at VSH Hong Kong will only accept patients who are referred by their regular veterinarian. Walk-ins and second opinions, other than true emergencies, are not accepted without direct referral. General practice services, such as wellness visits, dental scalings and vaccinations, are not offered. Our goal is to make sure that clients see our service as an extension of the general practice community in Hong Kong. VSH Hong Kong brings specialists in a range of veterinary disciplines to Hong Kong, and is fully equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities. Our 14,000 sqft hospital is located in the heart of Wan Chai.

貓狗突然口臭／進食慢咗？🫢 係牙齒響緊警號 !

寵物有牙痛未必識得向主人表達；但佢哋平時食飯、玩樂甚至脾氣，都可能透露緊一啲口腔唔舒服嘅蛛絲馬跡 🔍。

牙周病唔止影響牙齒同牙肉，長期口腔細菌感染更可能增加身體其他器官嘅負擔。除咗日常潔齒，主人亦應留意寵物嘅以下轉變：

🤢 口臭
持續出現明顯異味，有別於一般食物嘅氣味。

🦴 食飯習慣改變
突然咬得慢、咀嚼困難、只揀軟性食物，甚至成日將食物跌出口外。

🦷 口腔異常
牙肉紅腫或流血、牙齒鬆動或斷裂。

🐾 行為轉變

Sudden Bad Breath or Slow Eating? 🫢 Cats & Dogs’ Teeth May be Sending a Warning

Pets may not be able to tell us when they have tooth pain, but their eating habits, play and even temperament may reveal signs of oral discomfort 🔍.

Periodontal disease affects more than just the teeth and gums. Long-term oral bacterial infection may also place additional strain on other organs. In addition to daily dental care, pet owners should watch for the following changes:

🤢 Bad breath
A persistent, noticeable odour that is different from the usual smell of food.

🦴 Changes in eating habits
Suddenly chewing more slowly, having difficulty chewing, choosing only soft food, or frequently dropping food from the mouth.

🦷 Oral abnormalities
Red or bleeding gums, loose or broken teeth.

🐾 Behavioural changes
Frequently pawing at the mouth, increased drooling, or becoming more irritable than usual due to discomfort.

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait until your pet can no longer eat before seeking help. When every second counts, timely intervention makes all the difference. VSH is delighted to welcome Dr Duana McBride, Specialist in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, who has been leading our Emergency Department since May.

🥇 Dr McBride is currently Hong Kong’s only Emergency & Critical Care Specialist, holding dual board certification from ACVECC and ECVECC. Graduating from the University of Sydney, she earned her Master’s degree and later taught at the Royal Veterinary College (UK), training the next generation of specialists. Her clinical interests include respiratory diseases, geriatric intensive care, sepsis, and patient safety.

🥁 Outside of work, Dr McBride enjoys live music and playing the drums. For her, emergency medicine requires not only calm decision-making, but also teamwork and rhythm!

Over the years, Dr Cedric Tutt, VSH Specialist in Veterinary Dentistry, has provided dental and oral surgery care for more than 67 animal species, including cats, dogs, horses, wild cats, primates, and marine and terrestrial mammals 🐎🦧🐋.

Continuing our monthly effort to connect with the veterinary community and the public, the VSH team has been actively on the move over the past month:

🐾 Invited by the , Surgery Specialist Dr Carlos Villamil shared practical insights with over 20 veterinarians, focusing on surgical details and risk management from real clinical experience.

🗓️ At the VSH Monthly Symposium, Oncology Specialist Dr Andrea Mosca explored how to balance treatment effectiveness with quality of life when managing cancer cases.

🏠 Meanwhile, Emergency Veterinarian Dr Bosco Yeung, together with veterinarian Dr Heibe Lau, co-hosted a session with .org.hk for around 40 participants, covering pet first aid skills and practical responses in emergency situations.

Dr Camilla graduated from the University of Milan and later pursued advanced clinical training in the UK, including rotating and anaesthesia internships, followed by a three-year residency at Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists.

🎖️ In 2023, she became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA), an EBVS® European Specialist, and is also recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

🩺 Her clinical focus includes anaesthetic risk assessment, pain management, and monitoring of complex and high-risk cases.

🌿 Outside of work, Dr Camilla enjoys running and spending time outdoors, maintaining a sense of balance and rhythm—qualities reflected in her precise and controlled approach to anaesthesia.

🍫 朱古力 🧅 洋蔥、蒜 🍇 提子、提子乾 🧁 含木糖醇食品 🥩 變壞食物、廚餘

有就要多加留意嘞～呢啲嘢食，對人類嚟講正常不過；但對於毛孩，可能足以引發食物中毒 ☣️！
就算只係「食咗少少」，都有機會喺短時間內出現異常 ⏲️。

ACVIM Internal Medicine Residency Trained Clinician hosted a lecture attended by around 40 Hong Kong veterinarians, titled ‘Evidence-Based Management of Chronic GI Disease in Dogs and Cats.’ The session focused on practical, evidence-based approaches to managing chronic gastrointestinal conditions in companion animals.

Specialist in Veterinary Surgery also visited a local veterinary clinic for small-group case discussions, exchanging surgical experiences and clinical insights with fellow veterinarians.
