Headaches are not always caused by the head itself.
In some people, headache symptoms may be influenced by musculoskeletal factors involving the neck, upper back, jaw (TMJ), or surrounding muscles. These structures share nerves and movement patterns that can contribute to pain being felt in the head.
This is why assessment is important. Rather than focusing only on where the pain is felt, an osteopath evaluates how the cervical spine, jaw, thoracic spine, posture, and movement interact. Identifying these contributing factors helps determine whether they may be playing a role in your symptoms.
If appropriate, treatment may include hands-on techniques to improve joint mobility, reduce muscle tension, prescribed exercises, and practical advice to support everyday function. Every treatment plan is based on your individual assessment findings and goals.
Not all headaches are musculoskeletal in origin, and persistent, severe, or unusual headaches should always be assessed by an appropriate medical professional.
If headaches are affecting your daily activities or frequently returning, a comprehensive assessment can help determine whether musculoskeletal factors may be contributing to your symptoms.
