It was a great experience for me to attend the 41stAsia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress in Hong Kong 🇭🇰. I was able to learn from the ophthalmic experts from around the world, and at the same time catching up with colleagues from the Asia Pacific region!

What is it like to work in one of the coolest neighborhoods on the planet? Well, I am very pleased (and honored) to share my experience as my practice ( ) is located in Burwood ( ), which has just been ranked #16 on Time Out Australia’s list of the world coolest neighborhoods.

How did the rankings come about? Time Out surveyed its network of writers and editors across its huge breadth of cities to narrow down the vibiest districts in their hometowns. They then ranked every neighbourhood against criteria including culture, community, liveability, nightlife, food and drink, street life and ‘nowness’. The neighbourhoods on the list are places where the streets are alive day and night.

Burwood stood out for its exceptional diversity, which Burwood council claimed earlier this year that it was the “fifth-most multicultural suburb in Australia”.

Today was my last operating session with the amazing surgeon, .asrini who had spent the past 12 months completing our cornea fellowship at Sydney Eye Hospital. She is not only good with her hands, but she is also very hard working and she would get the job done. Moreover, she has been passing on her knowledge to her co-fellow, . It is with great sadness that I had to say goodbye to .asrini, but I am sure we will cross path again some time in the future. I wish her all the very best in her future endeavors!

AAO 2024 has come to an end! It has been a wonderful meeting with a theme of”Elevate”! I was able to learn new clinical and scientific advancements, witnessing the release of Zoster Eye Disease study results, learning new presbyopia correcting intraocular lenses (B&L envy and J&J Odyssey), watching Dr Soosan Jacob’s live CAIRS performance, not to mention meeting colleagues and friends from all over the world, and trying some delicious local cuisines including my favourite dim sum! I look forward to adding my new knowledge into my daily clinical practice.

Today I was super happy to be able to guide my fellow .asrini to complete a deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) through manual dissection. Initially, the big bubble technique was used, but we were not able to achieve a big bubble which would have made the whole procedure a whole lot easier. However, my fellow did not give up and persevere with manual dissection. Eventually, we were able to complete the surgery without sacrificing the host’s endothelium! This would be the best outcome for this patient who has advanced keratoconus as DALK has a much lower rejection risks compared for a full thickness corneal transplant. Super well done to my fellows .asrini and !

It is not very often that I achieved 2 milestones in one week. I implanted the new iStent Infinite from Glaukos a few days ago. Today, I am very fortunate to have an opportunity to implant a premium intraocular lens from Bausch + Lomb, Luxsmart, which is designed for providing distance and intermediate continuous vision with potentially similar dysphotopsia as a monofocal intraocular lens.

I am very delighted to finally be able to implant the new version of iStents from Glaukos. The new iStents Infinite consists of 3 three heparin-coated titanium stents preloaded into an auto-injection system that allows the surgeon to inject stents across a span of up to approximately six clock hours around Schlemm’s canal, the eye’s primary drainage channel. Once in place, the stents are designed to lower intraocular pressure by restoring the natural, physiological outflow of aqueous humor.

Today, I am very privileged and fortunate to be able to use the latest IOL technology (Tecnis PureSee ZEN00V) from on my patients who are undergoing cataract surgery. This new intraocular lens is a pure refractive lens which provides high quality vision with excellent distance, intermediate, and functional near vision with the dysphtopsia profile of a monofocal IOL. I would like to thank for letting me use this lens and I was told I was the 3rd eye surgeon in NSW to have implanted this lens. I would also like to thank my surgical team including the theatre staff and my anaesthetist for their support! I cannot wait to see the refractive outcomes when I see the patients tomorrow!

Happy times always pass fast! The 2024 ASCRS Annual Meeting has finally come to an end. The meeting was very comprehensive, which showcased a lot of upcoming innovative technologies in cataract and refractive surgery. I managed to catch up with many old friends, and at the same time established new friendship! I would like to congratulate .md who was the selected winner of the High Impact Surgical Pearl session! 👏👏👏 Last but not least, I managed to catch up with my fellowship supervisor, Dr Kashif Baig from before I left the meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone again in the next ASCRS Annual Meeting!

I have been very fortunate to be able to attend the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Annual Meeting this week, and also I am super happy to catch up with many good friends from around the world! Furthermore, I was able to go to a NBA basketball game between the Boston Celtics and the Sacramento Kings at the Boston TD Garden and witnessed a very exciting finish! Of course the Celtics won the game! 😊

Today marks a significant milestone in my career! I handed in my hospital ID badge to the manager of the Ophthalmology Department at Westmead Hospital. I had this badge since 2016, which became part of my life over the past 7 years. I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to look after many patients with very difficult corneal conditions in Western Sydney, and at the same time working with many amazing people within the hospital. It is always difficult to say goodbye, but I’m hopeful that we’ll cross path in someway again in the future.
