"I am scared! So I turn it down."

An ex-colleague called me saying his big boss had asked him to step up to lead the department because his immediate boss just resigned.

But he has only served the company for less than 2 years...he thickened out because his department has 30 plus people to manage. He has many "what-if" situations in mind.

My advice to him is that he should say "Yes" right away maybe with a few seconds pondering...or even don't bother to think

For every walk of life, the most difficult and scary thing is never the job itself, nor is the dealing with something new or something big, but the true challenge is always the scarcity of good opportunities for capable guys to prove themselves.

His sense of discomfort will be gone in a year or so, but opportunities never came back again !!

Sometimes successful people are successful not necessarily because they are the most capable guys than others, but because they take hold of every opportunity to test and train themselves constantly...and they grow!

Thanks god. My friend listened to my advice and he is now the department head. He may have some tough time coming along or nightmare as he put it...

but he will be fine soon!

Early dropout of newly recruited staff can cause detrimental impact to employer...

Unfortunately the percentage for a staff to resign within 6 months of starting in the new position could be as high as 40%.

Whereas voluntary turnover is generally seen as a positive sign for the economy, indicating that enough jobs are out there to allow employees to hop around the market, it costs the employer’s time and money.

Keeping voluntary turnover low has now become a hard mandate for managers in a company.

Despite the season factor in job market and some other factors, we want to discuss a factor that also can cause early dropout of an employee - WRONG EXPECTATION OF THE WORK ENVIRONMENT.

“Work environment” here refers to co-workers and supervisors; job assignment and obtainable exposures, etc.

We suggest employers to:
- Be frank to employees what you can offer them in the company before they are hired
- Manage their expectation at an early stage about the work environment especially when an employee has appeared too thirsty for a job offer, they tend to miss something and make insensible decisions.
- Aim for candidates who fit in your company just right. Pick the one who best fills your requirements. While this sounds nonsense, some recruiters just can’t help falling additive to talents who are over-qualified. They think the hiring is of good value, but they ignore that stability of the staff could be an issue soon.

How to Write a CV that Helps to Stand out Yourself from Peers...

Tailor your resume to clearly demonstrate how your experience fills the recruiters' requirements. This is the basic requirement.

Fine-tune your scope of past experience to highlight the most relevant ones and minimize those experience that might distract the employer away from your real strength. i.e. your resume should tell the recruiter what they are interested to see in less than few minutes.

A long resume is always not recommended but it doesn't mean you should hold back writing about your goods and strength.

NEVER fake your experience and knowledge in your resume.

Employers probably won't reveal at the spot but once they are sceptical about your integrity simply because your CV is considered too perfect to be true, you will get kicked out immediately.

A perfect and true resume doesn't necessarily helps the candidate win the job.

Remember employer is looking for a person who matches the job just right. If they find out from your resume that you are way over-qualified, you may not get hired because the employer is not sure how long you are going to stay with them.

Three Relationships an Employee Can't Afford to Ruin...

Relationship with your ex-employer / boss
Buiding a fine relationship with your employer/boss is important even when you are about to leave the company. You can't afford the consequence of a bad relationship with your ex-boss especially when they are the influential person in the industry.

Relationship with your headhunter
Warm up relationship with your headhunter regularly to make sure they remember you and what opportunities you are looking for. This is important as your headhunter may have thousands of candidates in mind, one can easily get missed out.

Relationship with your co-workers
It is obvious that a good working relationship with co-worker is important when you work in the same company. Besides, your co-worker can also be your long term career partner and bring you opportunities outside the company.

E&M's consultants all worked for sizable corporations and took up senior managerial positions before joining the company. They possess tremendous recruiting and interviewing experience and here is what they would like to share.

a recruiter's hiring decision can be made within less than 5 minutes...to be precise, the first 5 minutes conversation between you and the interviewer and the first impression.

Know the Two Types of Interviewers - a win factor in interview

What should you do when you are being interviewed by an interviewer who listen a lot and talk a lot. How about you are facing another who write a lot and talk less?

If you are facing the first kind, these people pay more attention to something not written in your resume. Their judgement tends to be affected by the first impression by looking at your dressing code, tone of speech and your personality, i.e. the inner thing. They may be less interested to validate your working experience and things you write in the resume.

On the contrary, if you are facing the second type of interviewer who write a lot and talk less. Then hopefully you have prepared for each single item you wrote in the resume because they care to know more details and each of your answers counts for whether you can get hired.

Flexing yourself to impress the interviewer

An interview is also a process of observing the interviewer and flexing yourself to make them like you. The reason for not getting hired could be because you have been acting / speaking in a way the interviewer doesn't feel comfortable...

Talk to us, you will find out more mistakes you have made in the preceding interviews that eventually didn't get you a job for which you are actually quite suitable.
