Announcing Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Department of Rehabilitation Sciences 2026

We are delighted to announce that Mr YU Tak Kwong Terence has been named the recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award of the PolyU Department of Rehabilitation Sciences 2026.

Mr Yu was chosen in recognition of his exceptional contributions across two pillars of excellence. For nearly three decades, he has maintained a deep and enduring commitment to PolyU — serving as a member of the PolyU Foundation, providing generous sponsorship for landmark departmental events including the Pan-Pacific Conference on Rehabilitation and the 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner, and mentoring the next generation of allied health professionals through the High Flyer Mentorship Programme.

His entrepreneurial achievements are equally outstanding. As the founder, Mr Yu has grown his company into a leading force in healthcare technology, introducing innovations such as overground exoskeleton technology and gold-standard isokinetic systems to Hong Kong. His work has raised the standard of clinical practice and brought meaningful improvements in patient care — both locally and across the Chinese Mainland.

Mr Yu’s journey embodies a commitment to clinical excellence, a spirit of innovation, and a genuine dedication to giving back to the profession and the community.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the assessment panel, comprising both internal and external members, for their thorough deliberation and consideration.

Please join us in congratulating Mr Yu on this well-deserved honour. His accomplishments inspire us all, and we look forward to the continued positive impact he will have on our Department, PolyU and our community.

【Global Exposure 🌍 | The 4th Mongolian OT International Conference & Workshop 🇲🇳】

We are proud to share that our PolyU "We Care We Share" (WCWS) team, comprising 13 dedicated staff and students, recently participated in the 4th Mongolian Occupational Therapy International Conference and Exchange Programme! Building on our long-standing collaboration, this trip fostered meaningful academic exchange, clinical growth, and global connections.
Here are the key highlights of our impactful journey:

🧠 International Conference Presentations
One staff member and two students successfully presented their research to an international audience, highlighting the critical importance of client-centred and compassionate care.

Topic 1: Beyond symptom management: the evolution and implementation of mental health occupational therapy services in adult psychiatry

Topic 2: Looking beyond communication: Eye-control systems and perceived mental health of ALS patients and caregivers

🤝 Post-Conference Workshop at MNUMS

Following the conference, our staff member hosted a specialised workshop on mental health OT case management at the MNUMS School of Nursing. PolyU and Mongolian OT students collaborated closely through peer discussions, clinical process evaluation, SMART goal setting, and exploring innovative ways to enhance independent living skills.

🏥 Institutional Collaboration at Intermed
The team visited Intermed IUHW Hospital in Ulaanbaatar to explore future collaboration opportunities. We had the distinct privilege of meeting with the Head of the Rehabilitation Department and the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Undrakh-Erdene Erdenebold. The team also attended a valuable staff in-service seminar on Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) management.

💼 Clinical Practicum & Impact
Through hands-on clinical exposure to cerebral palsy and mental health cases, our students demonstrated immense creativity and dedication, deeply impressing local parents and making a meaningful impact in the community.

This exchange strengthened cross-cultural understanding, broadened our students’ global perspectives, and provided an invaluable learning experience. Let’s continue to connect, innovate, and advocate for inclusivity in occupational therapy worldwide! 🌟

“Problems may arise, but solutions multiply; Drop all your fears, and chances will come by.”

Dr Laura Lo noted, “This collaboration aligns closely with National policy directions and responds proactively to local governance and livelihood needs. It focuses on the core needs of the new employment groups, including occupational health, psychological support and social integration, demonstrating PolyU’s strong expertise in healthcare, rehabilitation and social sciences. Through this collaboration, we aim to establish a collaborative mechanism and an interprofessional, comprehensive service model that combines ‘Policy + Professional Expertise + Philanthropy’, contributing to the Nation’s grassroots governance innovation.”

With the popularisation of the platform economy, “new employment groups” comprising food delivery couriers, express couriers and ride-hailing drivers bring much convenience to our daily lives. However, the occupational strain, health issues and psychological pressure they face from long working hours also deserve society’s attention.

To strengthen support for these grassroots workers, PolyU recently signed an MoU with the Society Work Department of the CPC Jinan Municipal Committee and The Keswick Foundation. The three parties will integrate government, professional and philanthropic resources to jointly explore an innovative, comprehensive service model specifically designed for new employment groups.

Three Key Highlights of the Collaboration:
🔹 Combining professional supervision in social work with rehabilitation technology to comprehensively cater to the psychological and physical health needs of the workers.
🔹 Integrating government policy, PolyU’s professional support and the Foundation’s philanthropic resources establish a “Policy + Professional Expertise + Philanthropy” collaborative mechanism, ensuring the meticulous implementation of services.
🔹 Piloting the initiative in Jinan, with the aim of replicating and scaling this comprehensive care model to more regions in the future, thereby deepening collaboration between Shandong and Hong Kong.

【PolyU Education 4.0: Reshaping Allied Health Education through Innovation】

What if a student’s first clinical crisis wasn’t managed on a patient, but in an immersive virtual ward?

Through Education 4.0, PolyU bridges the gap between the classroom and clinical practice. Led by 2025 UGC Teaching Awardee Prof. Shirley Ngai, we integrate AI and immersive technologies to ensure allied health students become truly ready for the fast-paced world of clinical practice.

At the heart of this transformation is HiVE—the world’s first large-scale virtual hybrid classroom—where students hone clinical instincts in realistic settings without risk to patients. Beyond HiVE, students also benefit from high-fidelity simulation laboratories to AI-powered tutoring, forming a student-centred, technology-enabled learning ecosystem that moves learning beyond traditional lectures.

This shift is both technological and philosophical. We are evolving educators from content deliverers into mentors who leverage technology to enhance students’ learning, empowering future healthcare professionals with the confidence and empathy to navigate an increasingly complex clinical landscape.
