Why we teach what we teach! AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and FCT (Functional Communication Training) are life-changing foundations for nonverbal learners. They are not “extras” — they are access to voice, regulation, dignity, and independence.
Here’s why they matter so much:
🔹 1. Communication Is a Basic Human Need
For a nonverbal learner, behavior often becomes communication.
Without AAC or FCT:
* Frustration increases
* Meltdowns may increase
* Withdrawal or aggression may occur
* Learned helplessness can develop
With AAC and FCT:
* The learner can express needs, wants, feelings, and boundaries
* They gain control over their environment
* Anxiety decreases
Communication reduces stress. Regulation improves when expression improves.
🔹 2. What AAC Provides
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) includes:
* Picture systems (PECS)
* Communication boards/books
* Speech-generating devices
* iPad communication apps
* Sign language
* Gestures
AAC:
* Does not prevent speech development (research shows it often supports it)
* Builds language structure
* Expands vocabulary
* Supports literacy development
* Increases social participation
For many learners, AAC is their primary language.
🔹 3. Why FCT Is Critical
FCT (Functional Communication Training) teaches the learner to replace challenging behaviors with a functional, appropriate communication response.
Instead of:
* Hitting → teach “help”
* Throwing → teach “break”
* Screaming → teach “stop”
* Running away → teach “all done”
FCT:
* Identifies the function of the behavior (escape, attention, access, sensory)
* Teaches a replacement communication response
* Reinforces the communication immediately
It transforms behavior support into communication empowerment.
