New Zealand scientists from the University of Auckland, led by Lu Ren, discovered a very unusual fact that some edible and medicinal mushrooms can significantly enhance the effect of the cytostatic paclitaxel against melanoma, although they themselves have no effect on the growth of melanoma cells. These include, for example, honey fungus (A. mellea), shaggy ink cap (C. comatus), field mushroom (A. campestris), poplar mushroom (A. aegerita), porcini (B. edulis) and P. eryngii. Particularly astonishing is the result that paclitaxel, which has weak activity against metastatic melanoma cells, in combination with the extract of the tasty and medicinal shaggy ink cap (C. comatus), achieves an inhibition rate of metastatic melanoma of an impressive 75.1%.

One of the few chemotherapeutic drugs with a certain effect against melanoma is the cytostatic paclitaxel (Taxol). New Zealand scientists measured that it inhibits the growth of localised melanoma cells at a rate of 39.2%. However, the extract of the mushroom lion’s mane (H. erinaceus) inhibits the growth of this melanoma at a rate of 62.1% to 64.4%. Certain mushroom species (A. blazei = brasiliensis, C. gigantea, G. lucidum, P. eryngii, C. sinensis and H. erinaceus) in combination with paclitaxel significantly enhance the inhibition of melanoma growth, giving a much better overall result than the use of paclitaxel alone.

The most modern scientific research clearly shows that for preventing the occurrence of melanoma, but also for a more successful fight once it has already appeared – in addition to avoiding excessive sun exposure, paying attention to any suspicious change on the skin, etc. – it is also useful and desirable to use various medicinal mushrooms in the diet, such as Brazilian champignon (Agaricus blazei), lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus), honey fungus (Armillaria mellea), shaggy ink cap (Coprinus comatus), etc., either directly or in the form of highly concentrated extracts.

Water-soluble and alkali-soluble polysaccharides from more than 10 of the tested mushroom species showed a direct antitumor (cytotoxic) effect against cells of both localised and metastatic melanoma. The most effective were extracts from the mushroom lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) and Brazilian champignon (Agaricus blazei = brasiliensis = subrufescens).

It is possible to fight against mental decline, whose most tragic form is Alzheimer’s disease, and to improve the health of the brain and nerves by using the edible and medicinal mushroom lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus). This has been proven by a double-blind clinical study conducted by Japanese researchers Mori and colleagues. The active substances from this mushroom (hericenones and erinacins) stimulate the secretion of nerve growth factor (NGF) and thereby the growth of axons and dendrites with the formation of new neural connections.

The development of vascular diseases, including the most severe ones (heart attack and stroke), is closely related to elevated blood fats that cause atherosclerotic plaques. Some edible mushrooms in the genera Pleurotus and Agaricus are rich in substances that help prevent atherosclerosis. One of the most valuable in this respect is the elm oyster mushroom (Pleurotus sapidus) – but it does not occur in nature here because disease has destroyed the elms. An opportunity for enterprising growers!

Complex extracts from medicinal mushrooms Lentifom and Super Polyporin significantly inhibit the growth of astrocytoma cells, a malignant brain tumor in humans – as determined by Croatian scientists from the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology in Zagreb and Dr Myko San. This can be attributed to the high content of antioxidant polyphenols (especially flavonoids) along with a high concentration of beta-glucans. The paper was published in the scientific journal International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms in New York at the end of 2013.

The edible and medicinal mushroom Brazilian champignon (Agaricus brasiliensis = blazei = subrufescens) can significantly help against various fungal infections, including Candida albicans. Namely, Japanese scientists Ishibashi, Yoshida and Tada in a double-blind clinical study showed that people who regularly used this mushroom for three months had an increased number of antibodies in their blood that inhibit fungal growth.

The very tasty poplar mushroom (Agrocybe aegerita) contains the highest amounts of lovastatin and GABA, determined by a group of Chinese scientists from Taiwan led by J. L. Mau, in cooperation with S. P. Wasser from Israel, after examining 35 species of mushrooms. Lovastatin acts preventively against acute heart problems and inhibits the development of atherosclerosis, while GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter that plays a key role in regulating nerve impulses throughout the nervous system. The cultivation of this mushroom is easy and simple (it was already cultivated by the ancient Romans, and today its cultivation is spreading by modern methods).

A water extract from edible mushrooms parasol (Macrolepiota procera), oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) and Auricularia polytricha has a significant effect against colon cancer cells – as determined by Indian scientists S. Tandon and colleagues. Water and alcohol extracts from these mushrooms also showed significant cytotoxic effects on breast and kidney cancer cells, preventing their growth and enhancing their programmed self-destruction (apoptosis).

Despite the very rainy year, or perhaps precisely because of it, chanterelles (Cantharellus cibarius) have produced well in our regions. However, the public is not aware that these tasty mushrooms also contain valuable antimutagenic substances, i.e. substances that prevent DNA damage in our cells caused by aging and/or exposure to harmful chemicals and radiation. These substances can even initiate the repair of damaged DNA – as shown by research by the Mexican scientist Claudia Méndez-Espinoza and collaborators.
