What if the reason you don’t feel fully loved is because you’re still protecting parts of yourself from being fully seen?
One of the things we explored in this conversation was how often we seem to hide ourselves most when we really care about someone.
We long to be loved, chosen and understood, yet when somebody arrives who genuinely matters to us, many of us begin subtly shaping ourselves around what we imagine they might want. We become a little more careful, a little more guarded, and a little less willing to reveal the parts of ourselves that feel vulnerable, uncertain, or imperfect.
I don’t think this begins in our relationships. I think it begins much earlier. Many of us learn that certain parts of who we are feel more acceptable than others, and over time we adapt ourselves in order to belong.
The difficulty is that when we hide parts of ourselves, we never really discover whether we are lovable as we are.
For me, authenticity is one of life’s greatest filters. Not because it guarantees that everyone will stay, but because it helps us discover who can truly meet us where we are, rather than where we pretend to be.
